The Coast Guard was first established in 1920 as the Harbor Patrol. The present coast guard service began operations in 1935. The Coast Guard has a rich history that can be traced back to when it was known as the Harbor Patrol. In 1920, the Coast Guard was created as part of the Department of Transportation and Highways to protect coastal communities from piracy and other threats to maritime safety. The Coastal Security Act of 1954 authorized the creation of a coast guard service composed of men and women who would work together to deter crime on our coastline. In 1975, the Coast Guard assumed its current name, which is also the title under which it operates today: The Florida State Coast Guard. Today, with over 1,500 officers and employees working along America’s 8th largest shoreline, The Florida State Coast Guard provides critical support for public safety on our state’s most important asset – our coastline. Our mission is two-fold: To provide leadership and assistance needed to secure our state’s vital resources while protecting citizens; and To keep people safe by preventing collisions between vessels and ashore objects." The primary purpose of The Florida State Coast Guard is traffic control on both landlocked coasts within Miami-Dade County & Lee County - including all inter county waterways from Key West/Marco Island southward through Vero Beach (Marine Bridge), Fort Pierce (Pierpoint), Port St Lucie (Port Royal), Cutler Bayou/Fort Myers Beach / Naples etc., and any ocean or inland waters not specifically excluded by local municipalities In 1978, President Jimmy Carter awarded $5 million for a new harbor patrol station at Northport on Maria Pass in order to centralize law enforcement activities along Anna Maria Island; this will include an helicopter squadron providing search & rescue capabilities

North Port, Florida is a city located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 24,534 at the 2010 census. North Port is prominently known for its harbor and shipbuilding industry which has been a majorstay of the local economy since its development in the mid-19th century. Today, North Port is a center of culture and commerce with several high-profile businesses including Fifth Third Bank and Samsung Electronics. The community first developed on what is now the mouth of Stonington River. At that time it was an outpost of Fort Myers on Miami Bay. In 1839, Captain John Rodgers founded what would become Northport on land he had purchased from the Seminole Tribe of Indians Minutes after his arrival there were only six people living in what later became North Port: Rodgers, three sailors from HMS Beagle under Captains Jervis Buchanan and William Kidd; Samuel Parkins ( afterward Sir Samuel Parkins ); Job Dent ; two women - one named Sarah who cooked for the men and another named Martha who washed dishes - both natives of England; two children - Willard Wearn and John Hennesy - also natives of England; four Muskogees - Alida Keyate , Anna Teague , James Tatum ;[1][2] plus three white friends - Drury Lane resident Nathaniel Coffin ; carpenter Israel Putnam Captain Rodgers decided to name his new town after himself – Santa Clara de la Vega – he being from California. He donated 500 acres (20 km²) to establish a town site that would be bounded by present day US 1st Street on the east side; What are now State Road 884 north to where US 41 crosses it just south of Cutler’s Creek on today’s mainland; present day State Road 928 west to SR 893 which ran through what is now City Hall Cemetery then crossed into old Lee County across SR 928 running concurrent with present day US 1st Street between Cutler’s Creek & CR 820 [3]; currently 3rd Avenue east passing through downtown before splitting off again becoming 3rd Avenue NE later joining I-4 about 10 miles (16 km) northwest near Clearwater Beach). The modern Coast Guard was established on December 15, 1915, when the United States signed the Asiatic-Pacific Treaty and activated the United States Naval Militia to provide military assistance to Japan in World War I. In 1924, the first national service program for civilians was established with a goal of creating a corps of volunteer firefighters. By 1969, there were over 54,000 Coast Guardsmen serving in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. In 1986, President Reagan authorized $5 billion for shoreline conservation programs which have since morphed into today’s National Coastal Security Strategy. Today’s coast guard gift history can be traced back to many individuals and organizations who have dedicated their lives to protecting our nation’s coastline and waterways from harm. Some of the most notable donors include Rear Admiral James Loye (1912-2002), Vice Admiral Arthur Capp (1925-2009), Commodore John Wickersham (1875-1957), Rear Admiral James Fenton (1920-2008) and Congressman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.). These individuals or organizations have helped create today’s Coast Guard as we know it: A professional organization that provides essential coastal security services; is committed to public safety through its outreach programs; conducts research and development; employs more than 52,000 officers and men; protects American coasts from terrorism, piracy, drugs smuggling and other aquatic threats;and responds quickly to emergencies on America's coasts.

North Port is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 61,353 at the 2010 census. North Port is part of the Miami metropolitan area. It is bordered by Biscayne Bay to the south and east, just north of Homestead Key on Biscayne Boulevard and to the west by downtown Miami. The first humans to arrive in present-day NorthPort were Native American hunter-gatherers who lived in what is currently known as Overtown during the mid-19th century AD. One of their leaders, Chief Osceola, convinced explorer Christopher Columbus to land on his neck of the woods on October 12, 1492 while exploring southern Cuba; after landfalling he named it San Cristobal de las Casas for St. Christopher (the patron saint of Spain). In 1845 Jacksonville businessman John A. Dillingham built Fort Dillingham on what is now US 1 near present day Doral Beach; this served as a commercial center for sugarcane farming and fishing until it was destroyed by fire in 1849. In 1853 Dillingham donated land along US 1 for an agricultural college which became University ofFlorida; however enrollment peaked at only 100 students in 1881 due to lack of infrastructure and droughts that year and again from 1893 through 1897; nevertheless university growth resumed with classes starting up in 1903 when Gainesville's former Agricultural Experiment Station moved into nearby Davie Street Plantation which had been leased from Valdez Brothers J&L Refining Company also shipping molasses out to Tampa during that time. During World War II NorthPort supplied munitions plants across South Florida with aluminum cans filled with TNT used as incendiary bombs – one can couldisters dropped each day over 30 miles long – dropping 2 million pieces over target areas including homes, churches and factories; many residents lost their lives as a result both directly through Hiroshima bombing raids during 1945 or indirectly through fires started by these devices aftermaths such as Cleburne MOVE demolition sites operated by Veterans Administration slag cart companies using hoses coming down from burning mills etc.; see also: Bombing of Japan timeline . After war ended army decommissioned arsenal but not all its equipment so some items like tanks remained parked there until early 1950s when they were convert into storage barracks called Camp Everglades inside then newly constructed Broward County Courthouse complex . At same time Ft Doheny crane was being dismantled outsidecity limits so government building materials like concrete powder etc went there tooELIMINATED FROM HISTORY BY CONSTRUCTION OF MUNICIPAL BUILDING IN 1951 . This event helped TO INCREASE POPULATION OF NORTHPORT FROM 1961 TO 1970 AS THE CITY HAD ITS FIRST BUSINESS REGISTRATION WITH THE COUNTY AFTER BEING PLANNED FOR YEARS preceding that date The city’s history begins with Indian traders who settled hereabouts beginning around 1800 BC when Paleo Pensacola tribe arrived looking for new lands westward….. By 1800 BC most likely more than one clan had set up shop along this stretch of coast because trade between Pensacola society and those living farther inland must have been quite extensive………. By 1840 about 180 “native” families still lived tenant- farmer type lives off hunting/fishing & gathering resources…." [1] There are several reasons why Northport gave rise to Miami–Dade County: its location on navigable waterway connecting two major seaports—Miami and Havana—and its natural harbor accommodating large vessels making it an ideal trading port before America fought side by side against Spanish colonialism throughout much of 20th century Southwest Florida——In 1898 North Port became a municipality within Miami–Dade County after voters approved annexation referendum results showing overwhelming support….. In 1835, the area that is now North Port was part of Jacksonville. In 1851, it became a town. The first post office in North Port was established in 1852. The town grew quickly and by 1860, there were over 50 businesses in the town. By 1870, North Port had a school and a store. By 1880, the population of North Port was over 1,000 people. In 1886, the railroad came through NorthPort and made it an important stop for goods from the south. The towns growth slowed down after the arrival of the railroad but resumed in 1923 when Interstate 95 was constructed through the area
