North Port, Florida is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 11,342 at the 2010 census. North Port is the largest city in Sarasota County and the second-largest city in southwest Florida after Fort Myers. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now forms North Port was founded on December 12, 1875 by pirate captain Bartholomew Roberts and his ship "Norseman". The town's first mayor was Wm. Fenton Cottee. In 1902, Northport became a law enforcement agency for all of Sarasota County and began offering its services to other county agencies as well as to Manatee County. On February 5, 1907 the first bank building in what would become NorthPort opened with $5 million in deposits from local farmers and merchants who had invested in it constitu

North Port was founded on December 11, 1855 by Captain George W. Goodrich and his crew of the brigantine Northport. The town was named for the port of Naples, Italy, where Goodrich had been captain of a whaling ship. Goodrich's men built a small town around the wharf they constructed and began to sell goods they produced from their ships. In 1871, North Port became an incorporated village when it joined the nearby community of Fort Myers. In 1925, North Port merged with neighboring Sarasota County to form Sarasota-Bradenton-North Port County. In 1959, NorthPort voters approved incorporation as a city under the name of "North Port." On November 5, 1963, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F Kennedy designated NorthPort as one of two ports in Florida which would open to traffic for America's missiles in response to Cuba's missile tests. On October 14th 1990 Miami Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown NorthPort including much of its civic center and many homes. The city declared bankruptcy three years later and all but six residents were evacuated before it reopened on August 4th 1994 with little or no damage done to any property other than some lost power lines inside the old Civic Center complex which sat rusting until recently due to lack of funds to repair it The Mayor at that time was Carmen Yulín Cruz who also served as United States Senator from Mexico at that time
In 1881, North Port was founded by J.P. Morgan and his partners as a dry goods depot on the bayous of Mobile Bay. The town quickly became a center for seafood trade and commerce, with its own wharf, dockyards, and warehouses. In 1907, North Port was annexed by Mobile and became the city's second largest municipality. In 1925, the city moved from its original downtown to a new location adjacent to the port authorities building on Pine Street. The following year saw the opening of what is now known as Northport Plaza shopping center on Division Avenue in north-central NorthPort. In recent years, North Port has experienced rapid development due to its strategic location within one of America's leading commercial ports and its growing international reputation for cultural attractions such as art galleries and music festivals. The city plans to continue developing key aspects of its economy such as education, business services, housing, health care and infrastructure while also preserving significant historical landmarks including the former Municipal Building (now home to the public library) and Union Pier where local maritime industry began operations in 1895
