By 1850, North Port had become an important center for trade with Cuba and the Spanish American War (1898-1902) provided impetus for growth. The town continued to grow throughout the 20th century as a result of its position as a major port on both world trade routes and its status as a bedroom community for Miami Beach. During World War II, North Port became one of key military installations in southern Florida because it possessed abundant munitions production capabilities. Today, North Port is an important cultural and commercial center located onthe University Boulevard corridor adjacent to Kendall International Airport. In 1830-31 Captains John Wetherbee (Captain), Ambrose Perry (2nd Mate)and Terence Conant conducted surveys for new posts on lower Keys that were eventually designated Hampton Roads Naval Station but no action occurred until December 2 1834 when Captain Moseley sailed from Key West bound for Nassau with supplies needed for construction of Fort Brooke at present day Marathon Point near today's downtown Jacksonville In 1840 Captains James Kenedy(Captain), George Haines(2nd Mate)and Augustus Boomer made survey trips up Androscoggin Channel looking for new posts but no action transpired until January 8 1840 when Commodore James C Farragut ordered Rear Admiral Amos D Whitehead Jr., Commander United States Naval Forces Caribbean Command (USEUCOM)to conduct a hydrographic survey of Bahia de Cuba under command of Commodore Isaac Watts USN while anchored off mainland Cuba pursuant to proclamation by President James K Polk entitled "Proclamation No 1" whitehead discovered Charlotte Harbor lay between Apalachicola Peninsula and Haiti whereas Key West was situated east of Haiti within present day Dominican Republic boundaries A permanent garrison was not established at this point because it would have required additional funds which were not available upon Farragut's departure from Havana harbor on February 14 1840s en route back northward via Puerto Rico - Force X Expedition Operation or "Galleon Adventure" as reported by Samuel Eliot Morison USN in his classic work History Of American Naval Operations Volume VII: Afloat Squadron 1912-1945 published in 1947 On April 10 1840 Captains Nathaniel Bacon(Master's mate 2nd class)and Robert Brownfield(Master's mate 3rd class)conducted Hydrographic Survey #4 opposite Charlotte Harbor under direction of Commodore Isaac Watts USN using improved 7in seacboats commanded by First Lieutenant David Wilkes USNR assisted by Second Lieutenant Charles Willmore RN . The town of North Port was founded in 1824 by Captain John P. Haley and his family. The town is named for the port of Jacksonville, Florida on the St. Johns River. The town grew as a result of its location on the river and its connections to trade with other parts of the United States and Mexico. By 1850, North Port had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, after Confederate forces sacked Jacksonville, Haley's brother-in-law Jacob Riis founded a school in Northport to teach children about slavery and freedom. The school continues to operate today as part of the University of South Florida’s History Department.
