North Port is a town in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,265 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. NorthPort is home to one of the two coffee roasters in America, Peet's Coffee and Tea Company and The Workshops coffee shop. The town was started as a small fishing village by truck drivers who would stop at the local gas station for coffee while on their journeys northward. By 1954, when NorthPort became an incorporated community, it had a population of just over 100 people. The first beans were roasted by Don Hutcheson and his grandson Hal Hutcheson at their father's store on Third Street in NorthPort until 1978. In that year, Don Hutcheson passed away andHal took over operations from his father at the age of 73 years old. In 1984, Hal married Patrice Donnelly and they opened their own store called "The Patricks". They continued to operate their business until 2006 when they sold it to Bruce Nygaard who renamed it Bruce's Coffee & Coffee House (BCHC). BCHC continues to serve as North Port's only full time cafe with its original layout - inside an old post office building on First Street which still remains operational today! Bruce Nygaard also inaugurated what has been called "the golden era" of BCHC - starting with its opening inearly 2007 and continuing until present day - during which time he oversaw a significant expansion both inside and outside of the building including new flooring, signage, kitchen remodeling etc... This period saw BCHC become one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Sarasota County! In recent years there have been several major milestones associated with BCHC - such as its 10th anniversary year in 2012 which marked another milestone for this iconic business; its move into new facilities adjacent to US-1 near Suite 205; as well as its newest addition - our very own indoor heated seating area complete with comfortable chairs and tables! We are excited about this next chapter for BC HC – we believe that this new addition will provide even more opportunities for customers to enjoy great coffee while enjoying some amazing views from our window!

The first Europeans to visit North Port were the Spanish in 1565 and subsequent French in 1609. The area that now makes up North Port was officially incorporated as a town on November 3, 1881. In 1927, Northport organized its own school district which became operational on September 1 of that year. On July 14th, 1928 Hurricane Flossie destroyed much of what remains of what was then Northport's downtown core however much has been rebuilt since then including new schools and businesses. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 27,521 people, 10,715 households, and 8888 families residing in the town. North Port was theheadquarters of the brigantine "John Fenton" which transported goods between Pensacola and Tampa Bay.
