North Port is a town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton metropolitan area. North Port is located on Florida's panhandle and bordered by Lake Okeechobee to the north, Nassau County to the east, Monroe County to the south and west, and Flagler County to the northwest. The history of North Port dates back to 1837 when Captain John Webber sailed into this area from Mobile Bay with supplies for Fort San Felipe on Cuba's "Island of Cuba." He named his new post "Fort Webber" in commemoration of this event. In 1841-1842, Colonel David Daughtry fought Indians at Biscayne Bay near present-day Fort Myers; he left behind evidence that Point Beasley (now Old Fort Lauderdale) was here before him. Captain James Akins landed at what is now Northport Harbor on May 10th, 1846 while bound for Key West with two hundred men under General John Fetterman; they were met by local Indian Chief Tocoma who said there would be no white man living within three miles of his village until Captains Akins and Fetterman destroyed all his villages in retaliation for their leader's death six days earlier during an expedition against Creek Indians near Pensacola Beach.Captain Neely Ewing landed about sixty men at what is now Midtown on December 11th,. 1861 during construction of fortifications along Tampa Bayfront which lasted until 1865 when it was surrendered by Confederate forces following their victory at First Seminole War Battle of Sanford Station.. In 1905 Ernest Moran established a citrus groves on what are now Harbor Boulevard and Gulfstream Drive in what is today downtown North Port after buying land around it from Juan Ponce de Leon’s brother-in-law Pedro Menendez Foronda. Moran developed a large orange orchard that yielded some 8 million pounds (3 tonnes) of fruit per year before World War II ended it because war production interrupted demand for fruit products after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.. In 1957 NorthPort saw its first professional basketball game when Jacksonville Jokers hosted Miami Heat in front of a then record crowd of 50,000 spectators including President Eisenhower who officiated.. On November 15th 1960 George Gillett scored 36 points off the bench asighting down 3 pointers to win over Boston Celtics 113-106 in overtime becoming only player ever to score 30 points or more in an NBA Finals game This led directly to development downtown with several high rise buildings such as Harbour Towers being built soon afterwards followed by One Financial Center originally called Plaza tower then changed again due to opposition from residents who felt their homes had been taken away without proper compensation In less than five years since opening its doors Plaza tower had become one of America's most well known office towers having been used by both Google[5] and Citigroup[6] amongst others On September 6th 1997 Hurricane Andrew hitDuval county killing 32 people making it oneOfFlorida's deadliest natural disasters ever . Many structures were destroyed or damaged such as Wharfside Marina which functions still today as a marina/recreational center surrounded by many vintage fishing boats .. The storm also wreaked havoc inland leaving millions homeless throughout Duval county ........... AfterAndrew arrived several weeks later NorthPort slowly started rebuilding but remained largely closed off from much daylight activity .......... By late fall 2001 most businesses were open but many essential services like water supply & sewage treatment were not yet available .......... By spring 2002 reopened fully with limited access outside city limits ....... Most recently under new management Forum Healthcare began operations inside city limits ......
