North Port is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 18,546 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Port is located on Tampa Bay and bordered by Hillsborough to the north and west, Pinellas to the east and south, and Martin County to the east and southeast. The first permanent European settlers in what is now North Port were French Canadian voyageurs who came ashore in 1795 during their trip from Quebec City to St. Petersburg. They named their new settlement after Pierre-André d'Iberville, governor of Louisiana at that time; d'Iberville had been deported from Canada for supporting American independence during the British War of Independence. In 1819, two brothers founded a inn called "The Grosse Pointe" which became one of the most important hotels in town with its own restaurant and stable for horses and buggies. In 1824, Captain John Ponce de Leon arrived at Fort Myers with his squadron of Spanish ships commanded by Rear Admiral José María Córdova y Saavedra while on a exploration mission along Sarasota Bay; he anchored off Northport's Golden Gate Cove (now known as Gulf Boulevard) on July 7 when he sighted land upriver but did not explore it because he thought it was an uninhabited island he had seen before on his travels across America. De Leon named this area La Isla del Fuego because of all the fires that occurred during his visit – some estimates say as many as 300 small fires! Captain Bligh landed his HM ship HMS Bounty on November 12th 1787 while exploring Greater Florida under Captains James Cook (the first European visitor to Florida), David Thompson (the first white man recorded sighting Indian Lake), Nicholas Biddle (the first Uptown settler), George Washington Vaughan (prime mover behind building of Stonington Wharf), Richard Moulton Marston (founder/manager/director/leader/chief engineer/builder of Lauderdale-Hillsborough Railway), John Taylor(of Broward County) on Mobile Bayou - just outside present day Northport limits - expecting only local inhabitants for fuel & supplies aboard his ship including Native Americans living thereabouts as well as about 50 head of cattle & 10 tons weight or so worth OF sugarcane! All men lost except mutineer Dr Phillip Jones who managed to swim back home unharmed! For more than 150 years NorthPort has been celebrated annually by locals & tourists alike as "The Festival spot!" In 1925-27 construction began on US 75 which would take travelers through town from north to south then east again joining US 75 near present day downtown NAOMI HILLS bound for Orlando early in 1928 when Interstate 95 was built! When completed I-95 made travel between cities much easier thus enabling people to stay close together rather than having them travel long distances each time they wanted to go somewhere! This also helped spur development within North Port itself with businesses starting up around I-95 corridor + other surrounding areas such as Clearwater Beach
