In North Port, Florida, the population was 9,790 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is bordered by Sarasota County to the north and west, Manatee County to the east, Palm Beach County to the south and east, and Broward County to the southeast. North Port is known for its white sand beaches, Blue Flag beach property and fishing villages. The city's economy is focused on manufacturing and service companies. The first Europeans to settle in what is now NorthPort were French colonists who established a small town in 1795. In 1824 Jacksonville was founded by British settlers but it never grew very large because sugar refineries were located in Jacksonville. In 1839 Spanish colonists arrived in what are today NorthPort from Cuba with hopes of establishing a sugar plantation but their venture failed because of lack of resources. A group of Englishmen led by Captain John Kendrick purchased land around present day State Road 441 in 1840 which became known as Kendrick Key because they developed it into an agricultural community with slave labor. After several years of growth during which many homes were built on this key road (now State Road 436), financial difficulties led Captain Kendrick to sell his land back tothe Englishmen; this event made NorthPort an official part of Jacksonville proper. By 1860 there were only 10 residents living in North Porterstown while 1 school was functioning within that boundaries; however when Fort Myers was established along Florida's southern coast in 1861 all activity within Pillow Head stopped until 1865 when Fort Myers reopened its garrison operations which allowed Pillow Head merchants some degree of trade military supplies) When Fort Myers closed down again after World War II many people fled coastal towns for inland FL communities such as Stonington (established 1904) or Clearwater (established 1926). At that time Poinciana Boulevard was just beginning its long path from downtown Orlando through Sanford Avenue towards Sunrise Naval Air Station becoming a main artery connecting these inland communities with each other starting with Poinciana Boulevard going east then turning northwest then northeast continuing past Clearwater before terminating at US1 near Dunedin later renamed I-75 bypassing Poinciana Blvd entirely leaving it paralleling Sanford Avenue reaching Sunrise Naval Air Station whereupon Sanford Avenue turns due south coming out just past Tavernier Airport serving Pensacola Bay area
