The Oakland Park Air Force Deployed Gift History Committee was formed in 1987 as a means of honoring the service members who have given their time, effort and love to our community. The committee is charged with caring for, preserving and flying the flag at the Oakland Park Airport. Since its inception, the OAKLAND PARK AIR FORCE DEPLOYED GIFT HISTORY COMMITTEE has logged countless hours visiting local businesses and social events to present a collection of military-themed gifts from all around the world. This year’s gift history highlights an amazing assortment of unique and thoughtful items donated by people from all walks of life. From tanks to T-shirts, there is something for everyone on this year’s gift history roster! While we wouldn’t be able to include every item that was donated this year, we can share some memorable moments with you. Here are a few photos from last year’s event:
The United States Air Force (USAF) has been deploying gift baskets as part of its annual Christmas celebration for the last several years. This year, there was a big emphasis on airmen and their families. The USAF created an online campaign called "My Favorite Airman" in which customers could vote on their favorite airman from the previous year's deployment. One of the top choices was Staff Sergeant Joshua A. Hinton, who served with the 1st Special Operations Wing at Lackland AFB, TX in 2011-12. He posed for a photo with his favourite airman basket and received a lot of votes! Sergeant Hinton is back home now after spending this past year deployed to Qatar as part of Operation Neptune's Spear II. During his time away from duty he took on many challenges such as participating in rifle shooting competitions at Walt Disney World and working out at the Pentagon's fitness center. He is currently stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state where he is serving as Honor Guard for Secretary of Defense Ash Carter during his visit to Seattle next week!
In Oakland Park, Florida, the United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to local military members and their families. Oakland Park is a town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Oakland Park were French colonists who arrived in 1768. They named their community after Philippe-Jacques de La Motte-Angloutier, marquis de Bayou du Rocher (1712-1790), Sieur d'Allemand's aide-de-camp during the American Revolutionary War and later Governor of Louisiana. The area that would become Oakland Park was purchased by J.B. Priestman from David Sarnoff for $1,000 on December 26, 1885. Priestman had bought land near Lake Worth and developed it into a resort village with an amusement park and golf course called "Priestman's Playground". At first there were only fifty people living in the town proper; however, by 1890 there were over one thousand residents living within a half mile of the center of town on either side of US Highway 82/SR 40 (later State Road 8). In 1912 construction began on what would become known as "The Oaks" – an all steel girders and concrete housing development designed by architect John Lubbock to withstand hurricane winds – which became home to some of South Florida’s most affluent people during its heyday between 1925 and 1945. The development was completed just in time for World War II when many couples left South Florida for Tampa due to rationing policies across different belligerents implemented during the war years (xenophobia being rampant among many Americans at this time). During much of the 1960s and 1970sOakland Park was also home to Aiken High School where students sang national anthem prior to games beginning

The first time the USAF deployed a gift was in 1951 when they sent a gift to the Soviet Union. The next year, in 1952, they sent a gift to China. In 1954, they donated a Christmas tree to Taiwan. And in 1957, they sent a gift to Egypt.
Oakland Park, Florida was once a thriving community with a population of over 2,000. However, the area now known as Oakland Park was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1821, General Andrew Jackson and his forces invaded Seminole Nation land in what is now Tampa Bay and burned down their villages. The Indian Massacreraged American settlers, who retaliated with violence against the Indians. This led to increased tensions between white and black Americans in the area and helped contribute to the region's current feuding attitude towards race. In 1836, Jacksonville Landing was founded on then-Tampa Bay by wealthy Englishman George Rogers Clark. The landing was used as a stop on supply boats heading southward during the Indian Wars. Later that year, Oakland Park became part of Jacksonville Territory when Florida acquired its independence from Britain. By 1840, it had become a small town with around 100 residents. However, during this time period there were also important expansions for Oakland Park: It became part of Jacksonville Municipal Airport in 1940; it gained city status in 1951; and it became part of the newly formed Monroe County in 1962. The 1960s saw an important growth for Oakland Park: It began hosting events related to NASCAR racing; it received its own television station (NBC affiliate WJXT) in 1969; and it began developing into a major tourist destination forJacksonville locals and visitors alike. Today, Oakland Park remains one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its unique history and attractions along with its picturesque setting within easy reach of downtown Jacksonville.
The Oakland Park community began developing in the early 1800s. It was originally named for Captain James Purdy, who had landed on the Miami River in 1802. The first of theOakland Park families to arrive were the Franks. In 1837, a group of Dutch settlers founded a small farm called "Hertogenbosch" nearby and renamed it after their country home in Holland. The name stuck and soon enough, there were over 100 people living in Oakland Park. In 1879, Jacksonville bought land adjoining Oakland Park from the Franks for $8,500 and laid out what is now downtown Jacksonville on what is now Canal Street. One of Jacksonville's first mayors was John Ahern (1860-1881). It wasn't until 1912 that Tampa Bay purchased land adjacent to Oakland Park from Jacksonville for $24,000 and laid out what is now Hillsborough County with portions of downtown still being built today. At this time, most residents inOakland Park lived near Tampa Bay's military installations like Fort Myers Beach and Clearwater Beach which made it difficult for them to move away when new housing developments began popping up around them such as Regency Towers and Mandarin Oriental Place.
