The Oakland Park Army base was established in 1915 in an area that is now known as the city of Jacksonville. The original US military installation, Camp Polk, located on the present-day campus of Jacksonville State University, served as the primary training ground for American soldiers during World War I. It was also where General George Custer received his famous commando unit, the Yanks. In 1920, Camp Polk was redesignated Fort Pickens and became home to the Florida National Guard. In 1925, Fort Pickens became part of the newly created United States Army Training Center at Fort Pierce, which offered basic military training to recruits from all over America. Located adjacent to downtown Jacksonville on Nautical Highway 1A – one of Jacksonville’s most important commercial thoroughfares – FortPickens soon became a popular tourist attraction for locals and visitors alike. In 1941, Tampa had become an active combat zone following Japan’s Pearl Harbor Attack and American troops were called up to participate in World War II. To accommodate this influx of servicemen and their families, Camp Pickens was re-designated Ft Myers Beach Army Base and opened on October 26th of that year. At Ft Myers Beach Army Base, enlisted men could enjoy civilian activities such as fishing, swimming and boating while they underwent their Basic Military Training (BMT) process. This program allowed recruits from all over America to attend basic training together under one roof with other service members from around Florida. Fort Myers BeachArmyBase remained operational untilactivated on September 15th 1954 when it closed its doors forever after serving as a barracks complex for infantry units stationed at various Florida bases including Pensacola Naval Air Station; Key West Naval Air Station;and Daytona Beach Naval Shipyard before being turned over to the Department of Defense in 1957! Today there are still remnants left behind from this period including several army barracks buildings along Nautical Highway 1A which remain largely unchanged since then!

In 1984, after being annexed by Coconut Creek Township (now unincorporated), Oakland Park became an independent municipality with its own government and police force.
