Oakland Park is a small town in Stuart County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Bradenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Oakland Park comes from a Seminole word meaning "place where the trees stand." In 1868, surveyors named it after Captain John Fenton Oakland and his family who had moved to Stuart County from Tallahassee, Florida. The first permanent settler in what is now Oakland Park was James Cook who purchased land in 1862 from the Creek Indians. Cook built a log cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1884, Benjamin Bogue bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of swampy land east of present day Oakland Park and laid out what became known as Bogue's Lakeside subdivision. By 1898, most of what is now downtown Oakland Park had been developed and renamed Bogueville after Benjamin Bogue himself. In 1915, General Motors Corporation leased 2 miles (3 km) of lakefront property south of present day downtown for their new plant called Mobile Assembly Plant #1 (later MAFE). Because there was no outlet available to export raw materials coming into Mobile Bay through Tampa Bay until 1959 due to an obstruction by headlands on Haulana Island, Chevrolet manufactured their cars here until 1979 before moving production back to Mexico City and other sites worldwide. Augustus Knight was one of America's most influential entrepreneurs and landowners during the antebellum period. He was responsible for creating key figures in Jacksonville's business establishment including JQS Railway Company president James Buchanan Drayton and mayor John Youngblood Plattner.Knight also played an instrumental role in developing Key West as one of America's premier coastal communities during the 19th century. In 1851, Augustus Knight bought land on which he erected what is now known as Bayfront Drive near present-day downtown Jacksonville. He named his new community after himself – Oakland Park – in honor of his home state of Virginia where he had recently relocated from amidst revolutionist activity thereabouts. The first post office opened inOakland Park on October 12, 1851; it was closed two weeks later due to lack of mail service from Jacksonville proper! At that time Key West consisted only of scattered Seminole Indian villages situated on barrier islands along Florida's Atlantic coast - little did anyone know that these settlements would soon become some of America's most vital commercial hubs! For more than sixty years, Oakland Park served as Jaguars' primary cultural and social center; hosting annual events such as their state fairgrounds debutante ball or their country Club Reunion Banquet (now celebrated annually by both clubs), golf tournaments (such as the annual Gaylord National Golf Championships) or tennis matches against leading Miami players . Its well-born citizens enjoyed exclusive access to top amenities unavailable anywhere else within reach: horseback riding at bayou Bienville or exploring one acre lawn located northeast corner today’s intersectionof 158th Street & Bayfront Drive known simply “The Green” where they would drink iced tea under gently falling leaves while children sold candy courtesy 'The Lady' concession stand just past today’s Girdler Bros ice cream truck lot). For many residents residing east or northwest off Bayfront Drive lived primarily within walking distance but limited means were available for interurban transportation so activities centered around citizen gatherings which took place either at local churches or Masonic lodges meeting inside heated barn danceshellions throughout late afternoon Sabbath days when no automobiles were available
