The Coast Guard in Oakland Park, Florida began operation on May 1, 1919. The Coast Guard was created as part of the United States War Department to provide security for coastline and inland waterways. On May 1, 1919, the first Coast Guard station in Oakland Park was established. The station consisted of a launch and eight men who patrolled the bay. The Coast Guard also provided traffic control during World War II. In 1951, the Coast Guard Station #1 was replaced by the current Station #2. In 1972, the Miami-Dade County Joint Airport opened and made Oakland Park an important airport servicing both counties. Finally, in 1984, Headquarters moved from Tampa to Oakland Park and Headquarters became known as Headquarters District 2 which is responsible for all coast guard activities along with providing command and control for all other agencies within district 2. In recent years there has been a renewed interest in coastal security due to Homeland Security concerns such as terrorism and piracy. As a result of this trend, new initiatives have been put into place to keep our coastlines safe including border patrols and search & rescue operations when necessary. These initiatives have included expanding capabilities at our stations as well as building new facilities such as a helicopter pad which provides enhanced landing rights for helicopters used for search & Rescue missions along with an information center that can handle inquiries about coastal safety from around the world. As part of these efforts we also support community projects that help improve infrastructure or create jobs within our local area including beautification projects such as removing brush from beaches and planting invasive plants; creating green roofs on buildings; providing access to land that is difficult or impossible to get to through regular road closures; assisting with fundraising events such as car wash days or bake sales; working with schools desegregation plans; helping promote ocean conservation causes

The Oakland Park Coast Guard Station was founded in 1933 by the County of Walton. The station was located on the mouth of Highway One and served as a warning center for sailors and pilots. In 1942, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current location at 1st Avenue South and 3rd Street East. It became a training ground for new coast guard officers. In 1957, the Coast Guard Station closed its doors due to budget cuts. However, it reopened in 1984 as an information center for the local fire department. In 1992, the Coast Guard Station closed again due to budgetary constraints but reopened in 1994 as a museum with exhibits about maritime history and culture around Jacksonville In 2002, Mayor Tony Yarber designated Oakland Park home to the Jacksonville Seaquarium which opened in 2002 on land donated by developer Walter Hickey Sr.. The zoo is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 9am-5pm or until sold out.
Oakland Park is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. It is located on the eastern side of the county and east of Fort Lauderdale. The population was 3,893 at the 2010 census. In 1836, General James Wilkinson established a military post in what is now Oakland Park to protect settlers against Seminole Indians. In 1840, Ulysses S. Grant purchased land from Wilkinson for $4,500 and built Fort Walton Beach on it as part of his Indian Removal campaign. The fort was abandoned in 1845 after Seminoles burned it down. The first residents of Oakland Park were two families who bought land from Captain John Smith in 1851: Drury and Fenton donated land for a church and school; Mrs. White donated land for a home and store; Mr. Gray donated land for four homes; and Samuel Hohmann donated land for an amusement park which became known as "the Grove". In 1865, Jacksonville developer Asahel Biddle developed plans to make Jacksonville into the world's largest cotton port by opening up shallow water surrounding Point Breeze peninsula on Miami Bayou (then called "Biscayne Bay"). He wanted to create an artificial bay that would allow him to ship goods directly from Europe onto American soil without having to go through Spain or Mexico City first. When Biddle failed to get financial support from investors, he sold his plan to Jacksonville developer George Rogers Clark Jr., who created what is now Jacksonville Landing on Tampa Bayou between Monroe Street and Constitution Avenue in 1867-68 under the name of Port Jackson Landing Company Limited Partnership with designs by architect Andrew Johnson Beal . After Rogers Clark's death in 1888, control of PortJackson Landing passed through his son-in-law Cornelius Vanderbilt III until 1945 when it was acquired by Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation . In 1901–1902Congressman William McKinley commissioned architects Charles Atherton & Sons LLP to design plans for what would become known as "Merrill Park", named after prominent local banker Julius Merrill . The area that now makes up Oakland Park was designated as part of Merrillville Township on February 14, 1902 (). On November 12, 1907 – one month before Hurricane Wilma – Tropical Storm Flora headed towards mainland Florida while situated just south of Palm Beach Island ; due largely to its proximity relativeto other hurricanes during this time period (Wilma had been Category 2), Flora winds downed trees throughout much coastal Broward County including both Pinellas/Stuart County line within 100 miles radius around Melbourne FL then quickly Moving Northwesterly thru Tallahassee FL into Hillsborough County ending Sept 29 near Clearwater FL landfalling early Oct 1 near Stonington Harbor .....Flora winds also damage several churches approximately 30 miles WSW Tallahassee AL causing roof replacement work at three churches.. birds died off large areas Around Melbourne Fl prior hurricane landfall

Oakland Park is a small community located in Polk County, Florida. The community was founded in 1892 by German immigrants, and was named for the Oakland Woods near its original site. In 1907, the town acquired land east of downtown to build a new shopping center and post office. The town grew rapidly after this development, and by the 1920s it had over 100 residents. In 1924, the town renamed itself for Jacksonville's mayor, George W. Broward Sr., in an effort to gain recognition from Jacksonville as a major city. In 1961, Oakland Park incorporated as a village and experienced rapid growth due to its location within minutes of Jacksonville's core business district. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Oakland Park underwent several redevelopment projects that increased its population by thousands of people. Today, Oakland Park retains much of its histroy including its vibrant commercial districts and diverse cultural attractions.
