It rapidly grew into one of the most affluent communities in the state and soon became an important center for citrus production. The city was renamed Oakland Park in 1907 after General James H. Oakland Park was founded on October 17, 1868 by General James Wilkinson and Captain John Rodgers. The original town site was located in what is now the city of Orlando. In 1907, the county legislature passed an act authorizing the erection of a public works company to improve roads and bridges in Orange County. The company was named the Florida Turnpike Company and its first project was to build a road from Sanford to Ocala. The turnpike helped spur growth in Oakland Park and other rural areas around it as well as increase trade between Orange County and Tampa Bay. The First World War led to large-scale unemployment in Orlando during 1918-19, which caused many residents to move into Oakland Park. There were also several attempts by developers to subdivide or develop land within the boundaries of present-day Oakland Park but these efforts proved unsuccessful due to strong resistance from local citizens who saw their community as being too valuable to be developed at any cost without their consent or agreement. After the war ended, growth resumed in Oakland Park with new development happening on both sides of State Road 442 which bisected the town center along its length. This shopping area today remains one of its most popular attractions with its variety of shops, restaurants and nightlife options available throughout the year.
