Oakland Park,Florida is a small town located in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1892 by farmers from Ohio and Indiana who had come to the area for citrus fruit processing. The name "Oakland Park" comes from a swampy clearing near where it now stands. In 1932, developers built what is now known as the 'Old Post Office' into a two-story brick building which still stands today. In 1938, Oakland Park became an incorporated municipality with its own fire department and election officials. In 1951 it annexed neighboring communities of Indian Wells and Belle Air to make up its total population of 2,531 people. In 1959, Oakland Park elected its first mayor and first city councilmember; these were Ethel Kapp (D), Donny Young (R), James Hines (D) and Donnie Welch (I). In 1966 they re-elected Kapp (D), Young (R), Hines (D) and Welch (I). On November 5th of that year they held their third mayoral election under new voting procedures which allowed direct vote instead of runoff voting - this time they elected Clarence Sledge Sr., also one of their own City Councilmembers/mayors. Oakland Park, Florida is a small town located in Broward County, Florida. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. Oakland Park was founded in 1892 by J.D. Payne and his family as an agricultural community on the southeast corner of what is now Sunrise Boulevard and Turnpike Road. The Payne family operated a grocery store and post office until 1906 when they sold their land to John Witherspoon and his family who named it after their plantation in Georgia which they had visited while on vacation. In 1916, the United States Army built Camp Dunlap on the site of today's city hall to provide training for World War I soldiers. It was renamed Oakland Park in 1921 with the intention of attracting American residents to help fight war against Mexico. After World War II, Camp Dunlap became home to Fort Lauderdale's first military installation, Fort Lawton which housed artillery batteries and other weapons before being disbanded in 1951.
