Oakland Park is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Monroe metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Oakland Park in 1835 and named it for their old home on Staten Island, New York City. They were led by Captain John Sutter and his party of 494 men who traveled through the territory now known as Florida during the 1830s and 1840s searching for an open land route to California. After several unsuccessful expeditions they discovered a tract of land that lay north of Stonington Sound on Biscayne Bayou (now called Jackson Boulevard) and submitted a claim to the US government in 1845. The land was surveyed and purchase by Colonel James Wilkinson in 1846 but no settlement took place until after Wilkinson's death in 1848 when his widow hired George Rogers Clark as her agent to solicit interest from other claimants. In 1850 Jacksonville became an independent city under control of the state of Florida; however, Oakland Park remained within Monroe County with its own board of commissioners. In 1865, following annexation by Jacksonville, Oakland Park became part of that city's municipal district; however it reverted back to its original status as a separate village after annexation by Jacksonville again took place in 1922. The current nameakes its origins from General Lafayette Hill plantation on which General Andrew Jackson dined while visiting Jacksonville during the Seminole Wars (1829-1830). According to some sources, General Jackson may have been so impressed with what he saw that he ordered all troops stationed at Fort Brooke near Mobile not to fire upon any Indian villages perceived as friendly because such firing would "reckonablely injure" both American troops and civilians nearby – this order has been incorrectly asserted as being responsible for starting Reconstruction Era black migration intoJacksonville proper beginning in earnest around 1875).
