Oakland Park is located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, about 12 miles (19 km) east of downtown Miami. The community was founded by Puerto Rican Americans in 1924. It became a citrus production and marketing center during the 1930s, when orange trees were introduced to this region from the Caribbean. The name "Oakland Park" was given to it because of its many oak trees which lined the streets. In 1943, a large park was erected on what is now the corner of NW 2nd Avenue and 17th Street. During World War II, Oakland Park played an important role as a military base for the United States Army Air Forces. The facility housed two fighter aircraft carriers and other aircraft that conducted combat missions over Southeast Asia and Europe. In 1965, Oakland Park incorporated as a village under the jurisdiction of Miami-Dade County; however, it continued to operate as an unincorporated community until 1998 when it became part of the city of Miami within its current boundaries. As part of annexation byMiami-Dade County, Oakland Park voted to establish itself as a city with its own mayor and councilors; however, this referendum failed to pass due to lack of support from residents. After more than 20 years living within city boundaries but never having had full municipal status underMiami-Dade County policy, residents in October 2000 petitioned county commissioners to create Oakland Park as a municipally chartered town distinct from both Miami Beach proper and Coconut Grove; however these petitions also did not receive enough votes to pass through commission review into lawlery. In December 2002 voters approved incorporation into the City ofMiami pursuant to state laws authorizing such incorporation; therefore Oakland Park becomes an official municipality within Miami-Dade County with all mayoral powers and duties as well as full voting rights on city councils throughout all four municipalities within county jurisdiction: Miami Beach., Coconut Grove., Homestead Heights., & South Doral.; however no tax revenue streamcomes directly fromthe municipality’s operations so funding resides instead with each respective municipality or regional government agency responsible for those functions
