From 1913-1920, Hixon served as President of the American Pistol Association (APA) in Miami Beach, Florida. During this time period, he also donated many pistols and shotguns to other organizations including NRA (National Rifle Association). The community was founded by English colonists in 1835 as Oakland Plantation. In 1875, it became part of Jacksonville and was renamed Oakland Park after its original landowner, James FentonOakland Park Post Office opened in 1886. The post office closed in 1962 but the name still remains on a building in town adjacent to the high school which serves as a local cultural center and museum. In 2003, city leaders announced they were considering closing the high school because of budget problems and lack of enrollment since 1991 when it opened with only 8th-graders. In 2007 City Council member Rick Reger proposed that the school be turned into an affordable housing development for low-income residents but this proposal met with opposition from some members of the community who felt their rights would not be taken into consideration due to their residency within Jacksonville's boundaries. As of 2013 there are no plans to close down or demolish the high school but it does face competition from other nearby schools such as: Pinellas Bay High School; Stonington Elementary School; and Harbour View Middle School which all open up space for students once classes end for those schools during summer break

In 1912, Jacksonville merged with Escambia County and became a part of the new state of Florida.
