Oakland Park is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,778 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1885 by P.G.T. Barnum and Jens Christensen as a small community on the east side of Jacksonville Bay. In 1898 it became a city under the leadership of Mayor John Witherspoon and was renamed Oakland Park after its location on an estate in nearby Plantation Key west of Jacksonville proper. In 1917 it annexed parts of Marianna into its city limits and re-named itself Oakland Park again to honor its new annexation status; however, most residents continued to refer to themselves as "Oakland." The town became more irrigated with water from Lake Okeechobee through ditches built across the bayou menthol near their homes during the 1920s and 1930s until they were replaced by canals dug through Purchase Mountain during World War II for military purposes; these canals continue to be used today for agricultural purposes. As late as 1984 (the last year for which data is available) nearly all residents lived within walking distance of either their home or work or school distances from downtown Jacksonville proper while only 2% resided outside that radius; though this percentage has gradually increased over time due to development within Downtown Jacksonville itself (and away fromLakeOkeechobee). In 2007 local developer Rick Snyder purchased much of Jackson's core land located around Interstate 95 east between First Street and Dunlap Avenue - including what are now known as downtown Oakland Park - creating what would become one ofJacksonville's major commercial districts; this redevelopment has resulted in an increase in population density along I-95 corridor outside Downtown Jacksonville proper since then making Oakland Park one of the most rapidly growing neighborhoods in all ofJacksonville metropolitan area – particularly given that it continues to remain largely suburban throughout much thereof despite being situated adjacent thereto.
