Oakland Park, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It is located on the east side of the county and has a population of around 9,000. The town was founded in 1892 by John H. Spaulding and his family. It was originally called "Spaulding's Garden." The name change came about because it became apparent that some people in Oakland Park were coming from Jacksonville to visit friends there and not vice versa. In 1909, the first post office was established in Oakland Park. In 1915, the first gasoline station was built in the town. In 1923, an electric light system went into operation in the town. In 1928, a movie theater was built in the town by J.B.[1] The first parade ever held in Oakland Park took place on July 4th of that year[2]. The parade route included almost all of Miami-Dade County as well as parts of Broward County and Tampa Bay. A fire destroyed most of downtown Oakland Park on November 2nd of 1954 but thanks to contributions from local businesses including hardware stores and churches,[3] it didn't cause any damage; however, it did call for a boycott by many residents who felt that money should be used more efficiently for essential community services instead of being spent on entertainment venues catering to tourism potential customers only.[4][5] In 1990s former Mayor Julio Diaz set up shop as a real estate agent/developer with over 25 years experience working inside both city hall and private industry within northwest Florida’s largest city limits – home to over 200K people with growing job shortages across every major economic sector since its establishment near Pensacola Airport less than 10yrs prior! Oakland Park is located in the state of Florida, and it has been a residential community since the early 1800s. The community is named after Captain James Oakland and his family, who settled in what is now Jacksonville in 1798. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted land that would become Oakland Park on November 3, 1513. The first residents of Oakland Park were African Americans. They arrived from Mobile, Alabama in 1819 and began working on plantations near Tampa. In 1826, Judge John Ladd purchased 8 acres of land adjacent to the existing plantation for $1 per acre. He named the property Oakland Park after Captain James OAKLAND (1768-1835), an American Revolutionary War veteran and captain of HMS Fortunato during the Battle of Lake Erie on October 25, 1814. In 1840, Colonel Julius WOODRUFF moved his family from Tallahassee to Oakland Park with their slaves. Colonel Woodruff served as Mayor of Jacksonville from 1850-1851 and then as Lieutenant Governor from 1861-1865 under Florida's new Constitution. He died childless at age 82 years old on October 25th, 1865 due to pneumonia contracted while serving in London as part of a Ulysses S Grant delegation inspecting British war efforts during World War I. Oakland Park became a white Anglo-Saxon Protestant community when General William TUSKETT purchased 5 acres surrounding what is now Second Street for $2 per acre in 1875. Mr. Tuskett served as mayor of Jacksonville from 1903-1904 and again from 1908-1910 before he died at age 86 years old on January 14th, 1912 due to a heart attack while visiting friends in St Augustine Beach Fla.. Mrs., Alice GREENWOOD TUSKETT succeeded her husband as mayor upon his death with three terms remaining until she passed away at age 91 years old on December 12th, 1951 also due to a heart attack while visiting friends near Pensacola Fla.. After Mrs Greenwood's death two female successors were elected by majority vote: Mrs Hilda BUSH TUSKETT succeeded her mother upon Mrs Greenwood's death; Miss Betty WHITE succeeded her grandmother upon Mrs Greenwood's death; however all three women later resigned effective February 1st 1959 following revelations that they had lied about their ages when seeking office; thus Ms BUSCH became acting mayor until March 4th 1959 when Averill HARVEY took office making her city manager position which she held until her resignation effective June 30th 1969.; finally Jane REED became acting city manager effective July 1st 1969 after Ms BUSCH resigned effective June 30th 1969
The Oakland Park, Florida area was known as the "Cherokee Nation" for many years. The area had a large Cherokee population before the Seminole Wars and after that, it was ruled by Spain until American forces arrived in the mid-19th century to gain independence from Spanish control. Afterward, the United States annexed much of what is now Florida, including Oakland Park. The area became part of Jacksonville, Florida in 1827 and soon afterward developed into a thriving community with its own schools and churches. However, various natural disasters and戦争 caused significant losses for both sides during the early 1800s. In 1848, following America's victory over Mexico in the Mexican-American War, San Felipe de Tejas ceded most of what is now Oakland Park to America as part of their Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this treaty, most of the Cherokee people living in or around Oakland Park were forced out and replaced by white settlers. Today there are still some Cherokee people living here but they are descendants of those who were displaced during earlier times.
