Since the late 1800s, Oakland Park has been a military deployment center for the United States Air Force and its various allies. In 1948, the U.S. Army began using Oakland Park as an airbase for its 1st Infantry Division. The city of Jacksonville annexed Oakland Park in 1951 and the military continued to use it until 1993 when it was closed down due to budget cuts. The first deployments were in World War I when soldiers from Ft. Myers, Florida arrived in early 1918 to help with training and logistics for European war efforts. They left after only a few months and returned home in February 1919, having traveled 3,000 miles! In 1952, the Army opened a new airbase at Oakland Park which served as their primary hub for operations during the Korean War. This airport was also used by NATO bombers during Operation Desert Storm in 1990-1991). After the end of World War II, many servicemen stationed atOakland Park returned home to their families or moved on altogether. However, some remained behind and formed units that fought in both Vietnam and Gulf War campaigns (the 1st Infantry Division being one such unit). After reuniting with their old unit back at Fort Myers Beach in 1995-1996 following 9 years of Peace Corps service among various other nonprofits working together towards peacebuilding throughout Central America - they deployed once again! The battalion was later renamed the 5th Marines and assigned to duty at Camp Lejeune. In 1951, the 5th Marines were transferred to Okinawa where they served as part of the Japanese military forces during World War II. Upon their return to the United States in 1953, they were redesignated as the 3rd Marines and assigned to Marine Barracks, Miami Beach. The 3rd Marines were reactivated in 1957 and again deployed in 1959 during Operation Neptune's Spear which saw Chinese forces invade South Korea. After returning home from their deployment, they were once again redesignated as the 4th Marines and based at Marine Barracks Quantico, Virginia. From 1962-1967, they served as part of amphibious assault troops duringthe Vietnam War and played an important role in defeating North Vietnamese forces. In 1969-1970, they deployed for another tour of duty in Southeast Asia before being disbanded on Guam. Oakland Park, Florida is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The community began as a summer resort in what is now present-day Oakland Park. In 1915, developer J. H. White opened his Belle Isle Resort and Casino on Belle Isle Island which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Monroe County. In 1927, White sold Belle Isle to developer Wacoal Enterprises for $2 million and built what would become known as "Oakland Park". The park includes a golf course (now defunct), tennis courts, a swimming pool and several other attractions such as an amusement park and a movie theater. As its popularity grew, so did its infrastructure needs including paved roads and schools which were built between 1928 and 1951. In 1955, the town voted to annex adjacent unincorporated areas making it legal for residents to vote on matters annexation-related without going through the corporate government process which required two-thirds approval from all of their respective municipalities within five years of incorporation into new townships or cities under state law; Oakland Park annexed portions of Grimes Cove West (later Grimsley), Lakeshore East (later Lakemont) and Pinecrest North (later Plantation) after voting by referendum on November 3rd, 1955 . A post office was established in Oakland Park in 1930 with mail service provided by boat from Achey Bayou across Tampa Bay to St Petersburg until 1954 when postal service was discontinued there also due to budget cuts by then Governor John McKay who felt that mailing items out of state should be handled through State Office Tower instead since they were more efficient there; however mail delivery continued until 1972 when only boat service remained providing limited mail options during highwater season

The annexation also put an end to its long-standing rivalry with neighboring Key Biscayne. Aftermath: The annexation led to heavy economic decline for Oakland Park; however, it remained one of Miami Beach’s most popular tourist destinations until the early 2000s when it began experiencing significant gentrification. Today, Oakland Park is home to a small number of residents and is gradually being redeveloped into a more residential area with few commercial establishments.
