The Oakland Park, Florida Naval Station was the first naval station in the United States. It opened on December 14, 1875 and served as a training ground for naval officers. The station closed on January 1, 1945. In 1948, the Navy transferred its Fleet readiness center from Jacksonville to Oakland Park. The center became known as Naval Base Tampa Bay and continued to be used by the Navy until it was closed in 1992. On October 15, 1990, USS Constitution (CV-4) collided with USS Alabama (BB-63) in the Chesapeake Bay off Virginia Beach. Both ships were damaged but Constitution survived and returned home after being towed back to Jacksonville for repairs. Constitution's crew donated their ship's engines to Alabama in return. Oakland Park is a small town in Broward County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. The town was named for Colonel John Fenton Oakland and his family who settled there in 1881. The first post office opened in 1883. In 1886, Oakland Park became a city when it amalgamated with neighbouring Liberty City. In 1927, the city annexed the community of Deerfield Beach to its north and absorbed land from Juana Estefan Homes to its east. In 1931, Deerfield Beach merged with Melbourne to form a new city called Lake Worth. In 1936, Oakland Park adopted its current name after Judge Augustus Eilersoak announced that he would retire from the bench at the end of that year's term and sell all his land in Broward County to make way for a public park system in what would become known as "Oakland Park". Oakland Park, Florida history began in the early 1800s when a group of pioneers from northeastern Spain settled in what is now Jacksonville,Florida. They named their new community after the Oakland hills in California. The founders werealos who had come overland from Spain and landed on the east coast of America during the Gold Rush. They built a small town on a plateau overlooking the river that served as their main trading route between Florida and California. The town was destroyed by fire in 1892 but was rebuilt with help from American entrepreneurs such as James Buchanan Marshall and Cornelius Vanderbilt. The city's growth continued until World War II, when it was hit hard by wartime rationing and an influx of Japanese Americans into the area. Afterward, Oakland Park became one of Jacksonville's most popular neighborhoods for expatriates and retirees. It has been through numerous changes since its founding, including becoming part of Jacksonville Beach before being annexed by Jacksonville in 1960; then again becoming part of downtown Jacksonville before being annexed again by Tampa in 1984; and finally becoming an independent municipality within Hillsborough County in 2006. Today, Oakland Park continues to be a vibrant community with a wide variety of businesses and residents who enjoy its unique culture and attractions. The economy is based largely on tourism, which has helped keep Oakland Park afloat during tough times throughout the years.
Oakland Park was founded in 1878 as a small community on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway. The town quickly grew and by 1910 had become a major shipping and trade center on the Florida Keys. In 1916, however, Oakland Park was destroyed in a hurricane that struck the Keys. The town never regained its former prominence and disappeared from record books until it reemerged as aghost town in 1961 when it was added to the Jacksonville-St Augustine-Orlando metropolitan area.
