The Oakland Park Naval Shipyard was first established in 1914 as the Naval Aircraft Factory. It became a naval shipyard in 1922 and served as the naval air arm of the Miami Navy Yard from 1924 to 1947. In 1951 it became the Oakland Park Naval Shipyard and Marine Division, which still operates today. The yards produced ships for both American and foreign navies and repaired or built ships for many different types of navy vessels. In 1957, they produced their first nuclear-powered ship, USS Ponce. The yards also produced the USS Enterprise (CVN-67), a nuclear-powered supercarrier that served during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. In 1972, after more than fifty years of production at Oakland Park Naval Shipyard, it was closed down due to budget cuts by then President Richard Nixon’s administration. However, it reopened in 1984 as an ammunition plant under the command of Commander Fleet Activities Tampa Bay. It remained open until 2000 when it closed again due to lack of funding once again but this time it reopened as a cultural center with exhibits about navy history and operations

In Oakland Park, Florida, the United States Naval Station Jacksonville is home to one of the Navy's largest and most important shipyards. The yards produced submarines, aircraft carriers, amphibious warfare vessels, and other naval equipment for the U.S. Navy for more than fifty years. The Naval Shipyard at Jacksonville began operations in 1885 as a small boatyard on Magellan Key. In 1912 it became a full-fledged navy yard and was renamed the Naval Shipbuilding Corporation. It constructed ships such as USS Constitution (1790), USS Maine (1862), USS Astoria (1868), USS Texas (1914), USS Tuscaloosa (1941), and many others during World War II. After the war, the yard was deactivated but recommissioned in 1964 as part of Project Apollo which produced submarine reactors for NASA's Saturn IB launch vehicles. Today, theyard produces warships such as CSS Virginia (1892) and USNS Merrimac (1948).
Oakland Park, Florida is a small town located in Citrus County, Florida. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Oakland Park was John Sisson who arrived in 1839. He named his small town after an orchard he had seen on his visit to Tampa Bay and thought it would be an auspicious name for a new community. In 1892, the Miami and Erie Railroad built a line from St Augustine to Clearwater which passed through Oakland Park, connecting with trains at both ends. This made Oakland Park one of the most important communities in Southwest Florida during that time period because it had access to all kinds of goods and services that were available only north of Tampa Bay. During World War II, many military personnel came to live in and around Oakland Park as part of their service opportunities. One such individual was General George Custer who lived on Beach Boulevard for many years before moving into what is now the General Motors Plant building on US-41A near where US-9 intersects I-95. On July 4th, 1949, Hurricane Agnes struck Tampa Bay and caused extensive damage beyond anything experienced by residents of any other Southeast Coast city at that time; however little did anyone know at the time how serious this storm actually was due to its proximity to Jacksonville Landing – just two miles away! All told, over $1 million worth of property damage occurred within Orleans County alone due to Agnes’ effects! In 1951 (the same year as Panama City), whenJacksonville consolidated with Hillsborough County under one government structure,Oakland Park became part of Jacksonville proper; however it continued to have its own governing body called the Village Corporation which met annually until 1964 when all village functions were transferred automatically “directly” into Jacksonville’s general government jurisdiction! In 2001 (the early days of cell phone technology!), Jacksonvillians voted overwhelmingly to incorporate their village into a much larger city called Jacksonville proper so that our village could better compete with other cities within our jurisdictional boundaries! Unfortunately though, not everyone agreed with this decision – some continue to argue that we should have remained independent until today! Despite these mixed feelings about incorporation/cityhood (amongst ourselves & others), today there are still quite a few people who call themselves “jaguars” or “oaklanders” because they believe that being part of Jacksonville proper is THE best thing for us!!

However, as new businesses open up in Oakland Park, more people are beginning to move into this sleepy corner of south Miami-Dade County. There is potential for increased economic activity if developers can find ways to consider unique features of this community such as its close proximity to downtown Miami or its rich history that could make it an attractive location for retail or office space.
