The city's name comes from an oak tree that once stood in the town center. In 1949, the city became part ofMiami-Dade County and incorporated as a municipality. Aftermath of hurricane caused significant loss for KeyWest Armory owners Harry & Al Capone with all but one rifle inventory lost including many rare guns such as King Kong Rifle being auctioned off for only $2 million at Marlin Firearms Auctioneers sale event hosted by then Vice President Richard Nixon during October - November 1973.. On September 20th 1946 Charles Whitman opened fire from an open window at University Of California Medical School killing ten people before fatally shooting himself outside after being denied admittance due to his mental health issues (later proven to be schizophrenia). One week later another gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College leaving four dead before dying from self-inflicted gunshot wounds moments later (later proven also to be schizophrenia). On November 1st 1946 Charles Whitman killed six people before fatally shooting himself near UCSF campus Shooting further illustrates that firearm purchases did not cease immediately following mass shootings incidents but continued throughout most of 1947 amid increasing awareness about mental illness among shooters/ attackers

Oakland Park is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–St. Augustine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Oakland Park" comes from the Spanish word "ocázar" meaning 'deep well'. The first settler in Oakland Park was Fenton Pond who arrived in 1851 and named his tract of land after James Ketchum, Jr., an American general during World War II who served as commander of Fort Walton Beach on Florida's Panhandle. In 1887, Drexel Hill purchased 640 acres (247 hectares) of what is now downtown Oakland Park from Ewing and built a large mansion there which he called The White House. In 1893, Dr. JF Ladd moved to Oakland Park from Stonington Springs, Connecticut with his family and started a medical practice there. He remained until his death in 1916 at age 86 years old. Ladd's daughter Alice married Colonel Frank Easley Keyes II (1865-1947), son of Colonel Frank Easley Keyes I (1849-1924). They also founded Oneida Hospital Corporation, one of the largest healthcare providers in Jacksonville Beach and Pinellas County area for over seventy years until its closure by that company's liquidation in 2003 following the sale of all assets to Jack Kapp Incorporated for $5 million plus future payments to Keys' widow Alice through her charitable foundationKeys later donated all his remaining stock to Another Place Foundation Incorporated effective January 1st 2009 which renamed it Another Place Hospitals Corp (APHC).
