Oakland Park is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,083 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Daytona Beach–Kissimmee metropolitan area. The first settlers in Oakland Park were George and Lydia Hickey who founded a cabin on the east side of town in 1819. They named their community after Oakland Township, New Jersey which they had recently been moved to from Philadelphia. In 1821 an act was passed by the General Assembly of Florida to establish new counties within the state and as a result, Oakland Park became part of Monroe County. In 1824-25 an Act of Congress created Stonington Township (now Kissimmee) out of land that had been taken from Oakland Park by Monroe County Commissioners for building roads and other purposes. This event helped give rise to the nickname "thebeautiful county". The courthouse located in downtown Oakland Park was built between 1860 and 1862 by Jno. Pritchard & Brothers with brick vaults and additions including a clock tower and opera house added later. It burned down on July 5th, 1880 but was replaced with a more modern structure just south of where it stands today before being completely destroyed by fire on October 9th, 1984 which still remains un occupants since then It reopened as "Oakland Park Municipal Courthouse" again on November 21st 2009 after reconstruction following Hurricane Irma .
