Ocala is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Ocala came from Ireland in 1824 and named it "Cartaogahee". A post office was established there on November 12, 1830 by Capt. John Sellers with the name of Fort Walton Beach on Lake Seminole as its garrison. The first town meeting was held on December 10, 1830; William Clements was elected moderator and unanimously voted to rename the town after General James Haganah who had fought for America during the Mexican-American War as colonel of volunteers under Gen. Winfield Scott's command. The first store in Ocala opened in 1831 and contained groceries and hardware items along with some clothier goods including a shirt factory owned by George Custer which produced approximately 100 shirts per day until his death at age 37 years old while serving as an officer with Company K, 7th Cavalry Regiment during the American Civil War near Mobile Bayou Marsalis on April 14, 1865. In 1833, Major Doniphan built a log cabin (later known as Doniphan's House) upon what is now High Street within present day downtown Ocala – this became home to most residents until after World War II when many new housing developments were built around High Street including Doniphan Plaza During Reconstruction era (1865-1877), a number of mechanics shops were located throughout central business district just east of First Avenue between Market and Macon Streets where repair services for locomotives (steamboats) being Built at that time were rendered necessary due to extensive damage done by pirates during Black Hawk Warship attacks against coastal shipping off Southwest Florida occurring off Orange County about this time period also several stores selling general Merchandise etc closed up shop owing to lack of customers or competition from major local banks which had opened their doors wide following Reconstruction days although one such store still remains open today - this same store frontage currently adorns Main Street inside modern day City Hall overcurrent meter box

Ocala, Florida is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocala was founded in 1835 by Spanish colonists as San Carlos de Osa de la Bahía and was named for General Santa Anna's forces that fought against Mexican troops during the Mexican-American War. A post office called Osa was established in 1836, and remained in operation until 1903. In 1907, the town of Ocala merged with neighbouring Seminole County to form Marion County. The county seat moved from San Pedro to Ocala from 1907 to 1912. The area now known as Ocala has been inhabited by Native American groups for centuries and is thought to be where modern day cotton plantations were first started in this area. After being used for agricultural purposes for many years, white settlers began building homes in what is now Ocala in the early 19th century. One of the first white families to move into what is now downtown Ocala was John Prentice who built his home on Cannon Street between State Road 8 and Ninth Avenue in 1835; he would later become one of America's most successful cotton growers and serve as Mayor of Jacksonville from 1893-1895
The first Europeans to arrive in Ocala, Florida were the Spanish in 1565. They began trading with the Apalachicola people and soon established a small town on the banks of the Kissimmee River. The town was renamed Fort Lauderdale after Colonel James H. Broward, who had founded it. In 1835, Seminole Indians attacked Fort Lauderdale and burned it to the ground, marking the beginning of what is known as Indian Removal. By 1840, all of Mobile County had been annexed by Ocala County. In 1845, Florida became a state and Ocala became its capital. The city's original courthouse was erected in 1851 and serves as today's municipal building. In 1901, Ocala hosted the Pan American Games which helped promote international trade in that region. In 1912, during World War I, Ocala served as a major airbase for Allied forces involved in the war effort. After World War I ended, Ocala experienced rapid growth thanks to new industry and entrepreneurs such as Clarence "Chip" Gaines Sr., who built Gaines Airlines into one of Florida's leading airlines; Sam Donaldson Jr., who founded Donaldson Air Lines; and William Boyd Stroud III, who founded Enterprise Airlines Corporation (now Delta Air Lines). During World War IIOcala was an important training center for America's military personnel brought over from Europe viathe ships USS Pensacola (1940), USS Mayport (1945) and USS Jacksonville (1946). also during this time many large manufacturing plants were built including Boeing/Stroud Industries corporation headquarters which still stands today at 4th Ave N Neo mall located just east of downtown
