The Ocala Air Force Base is home to the First Amendment Wing, which is responsible for providing free speech and expression to the citizens of central Florida. The wing also hosts a large number of airshows and other events annually. One of the most famous airshows hosted at Ocala AFB is the Thunderbirds fly-in, which has been held every year since 1951. The Thunderbirds are an American military aviation unit that performs stunts in formation during their fly-ins. This event attracts many people from all over Florida and around the United States. In 1954, the First Amendment Wing moved into its current building on base. At that time, it became one of only a handful of U.S. bases with an air force gift history museum. The museum features exhibits about both military aircraft and civilian planes donated by civilians in Ocala AFB throughout the years. It also has a collection of memorabilia about members of the USAF who have had significant roles in shaping Central Florida culture or were locally born or raised there.

The Ocala Air Force Base Museum has a rich history of air force gift giving. The museum opened in 1961 and is dedicated to the history and legacy of the Florida Air National Guard. The museum has a collection of over 2,000 items related to the air force and its role in society. One of the earliest air force gifts from Ocala AFB was an attack helicopter nicknamed “Stingray” which was donated by Lt. Col. Jay Snedeker, USAF (Retired). In 1978, an F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jet was gifted to the base by General Dynamics Corporation. In 1996, an A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog aircraft was gifted to the base by Lockheed Martin Corporation as part of Operation Noble Eagle commemorating 50 years since World War II ended with Victory in Europe. In 2010, another donation made to Ocala AFB came in the form of three C-130 Hercules transport planes donated by Boeing Company. These planes are named after generals George Casey (ret.), James Mattis (U.S., Ret.) and Tommy Franks (U.S., Ret.). This event marks another milestone for Ocala AFB as it becomes home to one of America's largest airplane museums!
Ocala is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 53,624 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Seminole County and part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. Ocala is located on Lake Okeechobee and has a humid subtropical climate with significant rainfall year-round. The area that now makes up Ocala was first settled by Native Americans in early Miami Valley culture as a means of trading goods with other cultures in what is now Central Florida. The Miami River served as an important transportation artery for these people and their food crops such as corn, beans, squash and sweet potatoes. In 1835, Captain James Cook discovered Cuba while exploring South America on his second voyages aboard HMS "Endeavour". He named some of what are now central Florida's rivers after European explorers – the lower Miami being named for Admiral David Barron (1698–1768), captain of HMS "Bounty" during Cook's circumnavigation; Everglades for General Andrew Jackson (1814–1848), who fought against Spain in the Mexican War; and Apalachicola Bay for Colonel James Moore (1773–1845), who explored Apalachicola Bay below Hillsborough City before founding Hillsborough City in 1824. In 1839, Major George Rogers Clark landed on present-day Lake Okeechobee to explore possible new land route to India through what is now southcentral Florida. His party captured artifacts from Indian settlements along the way which were then shipped back east by canoe across Lake Okeechobee to be exhibited in Philadelphia until 1847 when they were sold to lead explorer John Deere at auction. When Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto arrived at Tampa Bay in 1559 looking for new land routes to India he found evidence that there already existed a barrier island off the coast of Pinellas County called Santa Rosa Key. He tentatively renamed this key Santo Domingo Gore which would become Seminole Townsite near today's downtown Orlando when it was platted by white settlers around 1800 CE Clearwater Creek estuary complex ceded between two native nations: The Timucua nation north of Tampa Bay and the Kissimmee nation south of Tampa Bay). Ocala, Florida is a small town located in Northwest Florida. The population was 2,737 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Marion County. Ocala was founded by the Choctaw people in 1778 as a trading post on the Apalachicola River. By 1825, Ocala had become an important center of commerce and culture due to its location on the Gulf of Mexico and its access to ships transporting goods from Spain and Latin America. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee used Ocala as his winter headquarters while his army was besieging Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Afterward, many Confederate officers and men moved to Ocala and other parts of Northwest Florida before returning home after the war ended. In 1885, railroad entrepreneur George Pullman established his Pullman Palace Hotel in downtown Ocala which became one of Jacksonville’s most popular tourist attractions. The hotel would later be demolished and replaced by Renaissance Center which now occupies that site
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish conquistadors in 1514. Afterward, it was part of the British Empire until World War II. Florida was admitted as a state in 1845 and became an American territory in 1898.
