In 1945, the Ocala Army Depot was the scene of a momentous event. The United StatesArmy had deployed its first all-male infantry regiment, the 333rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT), to Europe in order to participate in World War II. As part of this deployment, the depot donated some of its munitions and equipment to the brigade. This gift has been remembered by many in Ocala for years, as it signified an important milestone in American military history. The 333rd IBCT arrived at Auschwitz concentration camp on July 29, 1944. There were over 1,000 soldiers from this brigade who were systematically murdered in gas chambers by the Nazis. In honor of these men and their families, Ocala Army Depot donated two rifles and one pack of ammunition to the brigade during its deployment. Since then, countless people have attended events organized by units or brigades within the United StatesArmy that commemorate this tragic time period. Each year experiences something different – laughter and tears shared among friends; stories told about what happened that day; photos taken of loved ones waving goodbye as they left for war; and even today’s POW/MIA issues brought awareness to those who remain unaccounted for after decades of silence.

Ocala is a city in Florida, United States. The population was 54,836 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marion County and the largest city on the Florida Panhandle. Ocala's history dates back to 1837 when it was founded as Fort Moultrie by Lieutenant Colonel James Musgrove of the Seminole Nation. The first town in what is today Marion County was built by Captain John Atwater on a small island near Mobile Bay. In 1839, Indian Agent Andrew Jackson granted land to Colonel George Rogers Clark for a military post on which Ocala would be founded. Ocala was named after King George III of Great Britain who had been visiting Mobile Bay when he heard about its location and decided to visit it instead of going to Pensacola because then he would have to go throughMobile Bay which he disliked. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces at Selma while they were marching from Jacksonville overland to Montgomery Alabama; this event led to the Battle of Selma where Union troops were routing Confederate cavalry and capturing 300 prisoners including General Ewell himself. This victory made Apostles Bridge Overpass an important link between Jacksonville and Montgomery
