Ocala is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. Ocala is the county seat of Marion County and home to the University of Central Florida. It has been the location of various military and naval installations, as well as a major cotton gin. The history of Ocala goes back to 1836 when James Fenton established a small trading post on present-day Fort Walton Beach Boulevard, just east of downtown. In 1839, another American trader, John Hargrave, built a fur trading post next door at what is now known as Hargrave's Landing on Chipman Street. By 1841, both posts had been abandoned due to Indian raids and lack of food supplies; however, they remained active for several years more until duties at Fort Walton Beach were taken over by Captain John Stoneman in 1845. The first white European visitor to Ocala was French Canadian Pierre Groulx in 1795 while he was exploring the area for Spanish interests; his group included José de Avila y Costilla and Manuel del Castillo y Pérez de la Cueva. Groulx named what are now called Frenchman's Bend and Little River after his friend Nicolas-Jacques Conte who accompanied him on this exploration. A small community developed around Groulx' outpost but little else happened until 1840 when Major Nicholas Biddle erected a military fortification near present day Gate City Park on what is now Military Trail (Highway 92). This fortification served as an important staging ground during Seminole Wars against Seminoles from Creek Nation living south of Tampa Bay. After Biddle's death in1846 it passed through ownership several times before being sold to Captain George Dixie Byrd in 1855 for $5200 which makes it one of Fla.'s earliest land purchases by an American individual. The first school in Ocala was also established here about this time–the Harrison Academy School which boarded students from surrounding towns for two years beginning in October 1850 before moving to new facilities on Orange Avenue northwest of downtown in1851 Byrd renamed the fortifications Fort Dixie after himself and opened up trade with Native Americans along its southwestern border; early settlers brought Jesuit missionaries into Florida under British auspices ostensibly to convert them but some traditional Cayuga Chief Kaskaskia arrived with them and managed to keep control over most aspects of their society even after leaving America In 1862 Confederate General Braxton Bragg destroyed part or all ofFortDixon after capturing it during operations against Union forces outside Tampa Bay; this event marked the end formally that Opelousas County belonged entirely within Confederate territory rather than being divided among Unionists north andsouth following Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation Of January 1st 1863 . thereafter OpelousasCounty becomes effectively ungovernable due significant slaveholding investments by Confederate sympathizers particularly those associated with Jacksonville businessman JnoFernand Pringle greatly exacerbated social problems caused by increased cotton production throughout much southern Alabama . Finally following World War II most citizens chose not to affiliate politically with either Southern bloc organizations such as Nationalist Party or Democratic Party although portions did eventually secede form Florida because Federal troops had landed there en masse during that conflict . Today Ocala continues its role as an international center for business services including law firms, accounting firms etc., thanks largely to UCF’s world-renowned main campus located adjacent Toombs Road off US 41 since 1949

On July 2, 1889, the first grocery store was opened in town. The population of Ocala grew rapidly and by 1895 it had reached over 10,000 residents.
