The Coast Guard Gift History in Ocala, Florida began in 1915 when the first Coast Guard Cutter, USCGC Stonington was donated to the City of Ocala by Mayor James J. Shields. The Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Stonington was named in honor of Captain John A. Stonington who served on the USCGC Pembroke during World War I and also commanded the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s vessel HMCS Citadel from 1919-1920. In 2019, a new cutter, CG Point Mugu was donated to the city by businessman and philanthropist Dr. Phil Gramm and his wife Pam Gramm. On November 1, 1843 – days after Indian Removal Act Congress passed – Darling purchased 640 acres (250 ha) in present day Ocala from Manuel Fontaine for $5 per acre ($ today). The land lay within lands granted to Native American chiefs under the Doctrine of Chancery which held that sovereignty rested with those who lived on or near their homelands and not with settlers or state officials. By 1800∞ less than 10% of Umatilla Indians were living within modern-day Marion County; most were scattered among various Indian Territory settlements located along watersheds supplying water to more than 100 villages across central Florida In 1818 Captain David Stuart founded Stuart's Station on Muskegon River about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of present day Ocala.
