Ocala, Florida is a town in Marion County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,242 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocala has been a center of culture and commerce for many years and is home to some of the most famous landmarks inFlorida - such as the University of Central Florida (UCF), which was founded in 1892 by missionaries from Germany; and Trinity Episcopal Church (better known as "The Cathedral"), one of America's earliest Gothic Revival churches. Ocala was founded on November 3rd, 1836 by settlers J.C. King and his family. In 1840, James Bogue became interested in land east of Orange Blossom Trail and purchased 640 acres from chiefs Wofford and Muscogee Chieftain Joe Bonamassa for $2 per acre. After much negotiation, Bogue had the area surveyed into two tracts: One comprising 884 acres (299 hectares) to be called Ocala Township; and the other consisting only of 160 acres (61 hectares) to become called Seminole Township because it lay within current-day Seminole Nation territory (). In 1845 or earlier, James Gaines acquired 2/3 interest in Ocala Township from John Crouch for $1 per share (). Gaines named his new township after Confederate General Robert E Lee (), who fought at Camden Station () during the American Civil War (). At first there were only men living in what is now Ocala Township: A post office was established at nearby Fort Pickens on December 6th, 1836 (); mail service began eleven days later (). The first white child born in what is now Ocala Township was Mary Ann King on September 15th, 1837 (). For over a decade before statehood arrived in Florida on January 7th, 1901 (), Indians managed this section of Indian Territory () under Creek Chief Osceola . By1876 all Native Americans had been removed from their traditional lands east of Lake Wales () excepting those living near citrus plantations outside Mobile (); however federal law did not recognize this change until 1907 when Congress passed the Choctaw Nation Appropriations Act . As part as punishment for their earlier resistance to Removal (), these natives were forced into reservations along with other Native American tribes in Oklahoma . From 1861 until 1865 several thousand Creeks also lived atop Everglades National Park (); however they were allowed back into their ancestral lands following US military victory over Confederate forces at Chickamauga Gap
