Ocala, Florida is a small city in Seminole County, Florida. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocala is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida and is bordered by Lake Wales to the north, Sanford to the east, City of Cape Canaveral to the southeast, and Indian Key to the south. The oldest permanent European settlement in what is now Ocala was founded by Spanish explorers in 1510 as La Junta de la Vera Cruz. The area that would become Ocala was first inhabited by Arawaks in prehistory. In 1835, Governor Manuel Félix Castro designated land for a new town on Mobile Bayou because of its strategic location with access to both Pensacola and Tampa Bay. By 1840, construction had started on what would be known as "the Town House." In 1846–47 when Seminoles began their War of Independence against Spain, many residents decided to stay here after learning about open enrollment for U.S. schoolteachers at Fort Brooke on St Augustine Island (now Jacksonville). After more than two years of civil unrest and siege-style warfare with Spanish forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna (1788–1836), most Seminoles had returned home by October 1848 when Ulysses S. Grant arrived with an American force from Cairo, Egypt to end hostilities. Salt water intrusion into freshwater marshes near present day downtown Ocala caused significant flooding during Hurricane Andrew in 1992; this damage was repaired within three months using $4 million from private donations and government coffers In 1998 US Cellular opened its first major cellular market operations center west of Miami – just one block away from downtown – which helped increase business activity around town while also driving up prices for basic goods such as gasoline In 2006 Disney announced it would build a theme park adjacent to IMAX theaters across Orange County beginning operation called Epcot Theme Park Phase II – making Ocala one of only a handful locations worldwide where Walt Disney World operates multiple amusement parks under one roof
