The area that became Ocala was originally inhabited by the Apalachee people and later by Creek Indians. In 1836, Spanish settlers founding San Francisco de la Plata named it "San Marcos" after General Mariano José de las Casas y Costilla who had been executed in Mexico City for supporting independence from Spain. When Florida acquired its statehood in 1959, San Marcos became Ocala and remains its primary legal name to this day. The first European attempt to settle what is now Seminole County was made by Captain John Stroud on November 15, 1763 when he landed his party of thirteen men on Biscayne Bayou (now known as Lake Wales) east of present-day Sanford. He named the landing place Fort George after General James Oglethorpe who had helped him win independence from Spain during the American Revolution. From 1785 until 1800, Indian attacks forced large numbers of white settlers out of their holdings in central Florida and many moved northeastward into what is now Seminole and Osceola Counties - part of what is now Miami-Dade County - instead. In 1836, Carlos Manuel de Saavedra founded a small settlement near modern-day Ocala after being driven out of his land grants in nearby Hillsborough County by local Creeks tribe members led by Chief Osceola (Titusosa). Afterwards Saavedra sold most or all his holdings to Colonel James Wilkinson for $1 million dollars which he used to purchase 887 acres (29 km²) northwest of downtown Tampa which he christened "Wilkinson's Land". Wilkinson renamed it "Ocala" after General José Gomez y Costilla who had died while leading an expedition against them some years earlier while fighting with Santa Anna’s Mexican army near Ybor City outside Tampa Bay. In 1841 Jacksonville developer Andrew Mellon bought Wilkinson's land parcel including present day Ocala for $2 million Dollars which he applied toward creating a town on it called "Mellonville". By 1840 there were over 20 houses and two stores on site; but within one year most residents abandoned the town due to lack of water supplies and high cost associated with farming techniques then current at that time.. In 1861 William Halsey built Fort Brooke along US 41 northwest of today's downtown Ocala just beyond the limits assigned to that location following a battle fought between Confederate forces under Robert E Lee and Union troops under Ulysses S Grant near Wakulla River Bridge over Tallahassee River west of Gainesville early that same year during America's Civil War providing strategic support for Confederate forces attacking Union positions around Mobile Bay
