One theory suggests that early Spanish settlers named this place after an important chief among them called Osceola who they encountered while exploring this area in 1565.[2][3] In 1668, Englishman James Watts renamed this place Fort Worth after his home town in Warwickshire England which he had visited two years earlier while on his way to establish a trading post at Mobile Bayou beyond what is now Pensacola Bayou.[4][5] By 1810 there were several small settlements around fort lifeboats moored off Clearwater harbor until Fort Walton Beach opened as a port in 1825;[6][7] then it became one of Alabama's main commercial ports with shipbuilding activities becoming majorlater contributing significantly to both Jacksonville's overall economy and Birmingham's later development as an industrial center).[8][9]:223 By 1890 Ocala had grown considerably to include more than 350 homes,[10]:253 comprising only 10 percent African American residents when white flight began during World War II led to most black residents moving out during that period; however, some black families remain today within the limits established by law enforcement efforts following Hurricane Andrew in 1992 which destroyed most if not all original structures although some new construction has taken place since then as mixed- race housing redevelopment efforts continue today outside much older white-owned businesses near downtowns such as US Airways Center (headquarters for American Airlines), Midtown Plaza mall (home to JCPenney), Sunoco gas stations and service station complexes located along I-275/SR 195 corridor between downtowns;[11]:251

Founded by Spanish colonists in 1795 as part of the Pensacola colony, Ocala became an important military and trading post on the Gulf Coast during the 18th century. In 1940, Ocala was hit by a severe tornado that killed twenty-one people and injured over 150. The tornado has been rated as one of the most destructive tornadoes in Florida history. In 1954, Ocala joined with Gainesville to become one of two cities in Florida to sign a state law recognizing Gay Pride Month.
The town of Ocala was founded in 1821 by Captain James Cook, who named it after the Indian word "ocha." The first settler in the area was John Sellers, who built a cabin on the banks of the Kissimmee River. By 1830, there were six white residents living in Ocala. In 1832, General Andrew Jackson visited Ocala and ordered all Native American villages to be burned. This caused many people to flee to Ocala. The town soon grew into an important trading center for the region. In 1865, Ocala became an incorporated city. In 1970, Florida's Turnpike Authority began construction of I-4 south of Ocala, which made access to the city easier for visitors and businesses. As development increased inOcala, many new businesses and residential structures were erected along I-4. Today, much of downtown is composed of commercial and industrial buildings dating back to this time period.
