Ocala, Florida is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 41,854 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Seminole County and it is also the county seat of Seminole County. Ocala was founded in 1837 by Capt. David Stuart and was named for Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon's land grant of 8vo Rancho Los Mariones (now part of Ocala). The first white settlement in what is now Seminole County took place on October 24, 1837 when Captain David Stuart and his party of settlers crossed the Volusia River into what is now Seminole County from Georgia. Captain Stuart had been sent to explore a new land grant that he had received from Spain. The settlers built a cabin on what is now called Old Fort Myers Boulevard just east of downtown Ocala. From this location they began trading goods with native Indians who were living near their villages on the Stela River valley north of Tampa Bay. By 1840, some 300 people lived in Ocala including 100 men and 50 women traders who traded goods with Native Americans and buyers from other parts of Florida as far away as Alabama and Tennessee. In 1842 Henry Clay Frick organized a group of capitalists to build an railroad through central Florida which would connect Tampa with Jacksonville then Cincinnati via Mobile Bayou. The company's president wanted to name the railway after General James Kenedy who had fought bravely against Mexico during the Mexican–American War before becoming Ulysses S Grant's Vice President In early 1845 General John Cushing relieved Frick as president of the railroad company because he felt that Kenedy should have been given credit for its construction rather than being given short shrift by others involved in its development On December 12th Governor James Mecom appointed Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston as Commandant General at Tallahassee to command all military forces within Central Florida responsible for suppressing Indian slave-running operations within or adjacent to Indian reservations owned or controlled by Tecumseh Society members located east Of Lakeland where those activities were taking place . Colonel Johnston ordered all such activities stopped immediately . As a result, Tecumseh society members were widely known throughout much of central Florida as "the bad guys". For years afterwards many residents erroneously believed that General Johnston himself personally conducted most or all these Activities ..
