Ocala, Florida is a small city located in Marion County, Florida. The population was 20,593 at the 2010 census. Ocala is the county seat of Marion County. The city's historic district encompasses more than 136 acres and includes buildings dating back to 1892. The Historic District Preservation Act of 1966 defined it as an eligible area for National Register nomination, and it was added to the National Register on January 28, 2000. The history of Ocala can be traced back to 1892 when a group of businessmen from Stonington, Connecticut purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of Mobile Bay in Marion County for $2 per acre ($100 million today). They named their new town after General John C. Moorehead who had fought in the Seminole Wars and then won fame as commander of Ulysses S. Grant's Army during Reconstruction in Alabama/Florida. On May 6, 1893,General Moorehead led a band of settlers from Ocala on horseback through Mobile Bay to purchase 1 square mile (3 km²) east of present-day downtown Ocala for $1 per acre ($4 million today). This land would be used for agricultural purposes until 1907 when it was developed into what is now known as Quaker Square Park which still occupies that location today! In 1896 Mayor Henson proposed that the name "Ocala" be changed from "Stonington" to "Marion", thinking that this would give better recognition to his city by other residents and businesses within the state government. After much discussion including vote by committee members on August 9th with only three against changing the name there were Ayes with Mayor Henson Presenting Resolution No: 5653; therefore approval was given subject to review by City Council before implementation could take place! On October 25th 1902 citizens voted overwhelmingly not to annex any other communities within Marion County although annexation proposals had been made by Spanish Fort (later Pensacola), Live Oak (later Moultrie), Dunnellon (later Sanford), Brooksville and several others throughout early 1903 without success! ThisResidents referendum demonstrated growing dissatisfaction with consolidation plans being put forth by various municipality heads while also indicatinggrowing anger over high taxes being levied against residents without proper justification orEnvironmental impact statements ever being prepared or agreed upon! In response Mayor Henson appointed a citizens' committee consistingof himself(Chairman), Druellen(Vice Chairman), Wernham(Secretary treasurer)and myselfto study annexation possibilities & make recommendations basedUpon my findings!! On November 15th 1902 annexed cities became official under our new Name: "Municipality Of “O”CALA”!" In 1922 renamed again To “Marion County Community College System” due To mergers With neighboring Cities Of Pensacola And Live Oak As Well As New Additions Of Dunnellon And Sanford!!! Today we arecontinuing Under Our Current Name: “Marion Community College System – Ocala”
