The United StatesArmy has a long and honorable history in Ocoee, Florida. The first military installation in the area was Fort Brooke on February 14th, 1898. It was during World War I that the United States Army decided to set up an encampment in what is now Ocoee. A company of riflemen from Coosa County arrived at Fort Brooke on July 1st, 1915 to begin training for their role in World War I. One of the most important moments in the history of the U.S. Army garrisoning Ocoee occurred on November 15th, 1941 when Generalissimo Franklin D. Roosevelt announced his decision to arm Japan with war materiel and planes. The establishment of a military base here allowed for more efficient troop movements and minimized movement around Central Florida due to its size and population density limitations. After World War II, there were several expansions of the U.SArmy presence in Central Florida including Ft Myers (May 1944), Melbourne (July 1945), Apalachicola (August 1947) and Gainesville (January 1948). These installations served as bases for various commands such as Military Intelligence Service Headquarters (MIS-HQ), Ninth Air Force headquarters, Third Infantry Division Headquarters and artillery batteries stationed throughout Central Florida beaches along with other command posts across Southeast Asia during both world wars

The city of Ocoee, Florida is located in central Miami-Dade County and is the county seat for both Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,868,724. Ocoee was founded on August 26, 1839 by American pilot Captain Edward Pritchard as part of a land swap with Indian chief Coacoochee. The original town was named after General John C. Stuart's Expedition which landed at Fort Lauderdale in 1838 searching for a route to Cuba. In 1861, following the American Civil War, Ocoee became an important port on the Atlantic Coast as Confederate munitions shipments passed through its customs facilities route from Jacksonville to Wilmington and then Baltimore and Richmond. During World War II Ocoee served as one of two landing points for troops invading Key West during Operation Neptune's Spear in 1944. The city also hosted various military events related to that campaign including a Marine Band concert at the Broward County Fairgrounds in October 1945 and an air show over downtown on November 5th sponsored by Bendix Ballistics Corporation (later Boeing). Southeast Florida's first major airport opened at Ocoee Municipal Airport on February 6th, 1947 with commercial service starting thirteen days later under name "Banana Air". The airport closed when it merged with Orlando International Airport circa 1966 but remains listed on FAA charts as an active general aviation reliever airport serving I-95W outbound between Orlando Regional Airport and Daytona Beach International Airport until it too closed circa 1990 due to budget cuts within FAA leadership during the late 1980s recession. The town of Ocoee, located in Citrus County, Florida was founded by James O'Keefe and his family in 1892. The town name is derived from the Seminole word "occhia" which means "a place to wash clothes." In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Ocoee due to its location on a branch of the Olustee River. The first post office opened in 1912. By 1922, there were only 10 people living in Ocoee. However, during World War II, the population increased as many residents participated in the military or served through patriotic organizations such as American Legion or United States Coast Guard. In 1951, the community had a population of 507 residents and it was renamed after General Hernando De Soto who fought at Pensacola Bay during the Mexican-American War. The first school in Ocoee opened in 1914 and it continued serving until 1954 when it became part of Booker T Washington High School. During World War II, many businesses closed because they were unable to contribute to war effort; however, some reopened after hostilities ended. One of these businesses was JCPenney which reopened afterthe war and continues operating today as JCPenney's Floridian store. Afterward, many farms were developed around the town and several shopping malls were built including one called North Mall thatopenedin 1984 which remains open today.
Ocoee was founded in 1892 by John H. White and his wife, Anna P. White. The town was named for the Oconee River which flowed through it. It became a citrus-growing community due to its location on the banks of the river. The first citrus crop was grown in 1893 and oranges were harvested from trees in 1915. In 1930, the White family sold their holdings in Ocoee to Florida Citrus Growers Association, Inc., which remains the proprietor of most of the orchards today.
