Ocoee was founded in 1837 as a small community on the banks of Chickasaw Lake. The area now includes the city of Ocoee and portions of Polk, Seminole, and Monroe counties. In 1875, Ocoee became a town after being chosen as one of five finalists for the then-new county seat for Putnam County. The site that is now downtown Ocoee was chosen because it would be close to the courthouse and other important infrastructure. By 1907, most of what is now downtown Ocoee had been built and it became an incorporated city. In 1925, when Putnam County merged into Florida's new state government, Oacoeche was included within the new Palm Beach County. As part of that merger, Palm Beach annexed most of what is now Miami-Dade County while leaving Ocoee unincorporated. However, in 1992, with the creation of Miami-Dade County again, OCoEE became once again a part of that county.
In 1827, the Ocoee River was named for Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The town of Ocoee was founded on the banks of the river in 1828 by General John C. Wilkinson and his Tennessee Volunteers. In 1830, Wilkinson's brother-in-law, Colonel James K. Polk, became governor of Florida and ordered Wilkinson to move the capital from Tallahassee to Ocoee so that Polk could be closer to state government officials. The first courthouse in Ocoee was built in 1829. The first school in Ocoee was opened in 1830 by Rev. William Greenough as a mission school for Seminoles who had fled Cuba during the Seminole Wars. In 1840, Jacksonville moved from Tallahassee to become the new state capital and OcoEE became its second city after Jacksonville. The city's growth stopped when Confederate forces captured Fort Donelson on April 12, 1862 and began besieging Jacksonville while also burning all of Jacksonville except for a few blocks near downtown which were spared because they were used as ammunition storage facilities for Fort Donelson defenders. On May 15th Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army into Jacksonville under cover of darkness and successfully stormed Fort Donelson without any loss to their own forces or those of Union General Ulysses S Grant who arrived later that day with reinforcements following an advance through early morning skirmishes acrossriver
