Ocoee, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,664 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocoee is located on U.S. Route 1 about 20 miles east of Orlando and 30 miles north of Sanford. The first European to visit the area was José Martí in 1835 when he stopped near Ocoee on his way from Havana to Tampa Bay. The town's namesake, General José de O'Flaherty, landed here in 1847 with his brigade during the Mexican-American War and named it after himself as an act of friendship and support for American forces fighting against Mexico. In 1868, construction began on what would become one of America's first commercial steamboats – the "Ocoee". In 1925, when Interstate 95 was built through Polk County, Ocoee became its eastern terminus; today it remains a small rural community with few streets paved or maintained beyond their original widths due to limited financial resources available for such projects within its boundaries. However, much has changed since then: two shopping malls were built in nearby Oviedo (the Mall at Knightsbridge and Oneida), while other businesses have moved into the area such as Applebee's restaurant which opened in 1984 and currently occupies over half of a block between Central Boulevard and US 1A/SR 347N/SR 348E - making it one of only a handful of independently owned restaurants remaining in central Kissimmee (northcentral Orange County).

In the early 1800s, Ocoee was a small Indian town in central Florida. The area was first settled by Seminoles and later by African Americans. In 1821, the United States acquired it from Spain as part of the Treaty of Gadsden. After the American Revolution, Ocoee became a center for slave trade operations. In 1828, it was renamed Jacksonville after General Andrew Jackson's military victory over Mexico at New Orleans. The first local paper in Ocoee was the Republican. It was started in 1829 by John Pemberton and is still published today. The first school in Ocoee was called Western Female Academy and opened on October 15th, 1830. It taught girls grades one through eight. In 1831, Ocoee had its own jail and a courthouse were built. The town also got its first water tower in 1832-33. Ocoee experienced several boom times during its early years but eventually went bust due to low population growth rates and various economic problems such as natural disasters like hurricanes (1834-35), soil depletion from agriculture (1841), lack of markets for goods produced here (1851),imerican Civil War (1861-65),and Reconstruction Era labor shortages caused by freed slaves migrating to new areas (1868). However, some aspects of this history that have been popular tourist attractions include: Fort Walton Beach where many plantations were located; Old Spanish Fort; Hurricane House Museum & Gardens; and Cocoa Beach Aquarium/Pets International Seaquarium
In 1837, the area now known as Ocoee was a part of Seminole County, Florida. The Seminoles had been living in what is now Ocoee for centuries and their territory extended from present-day Sarasota County to east-northeast Montgomery County. In 1837, the United States government acquired 1/4 of all the land in Florida that would later be called Orange County, including what is now Ocoee. This acquisition was made through the Louisiana Purchase and was intended to add land to President James K. Polk’s agenda for expanding U.S. territory westward. The first white person to reside in what is today Ocoee was Captured John Kearny who explored and claimed parts of Seminole County for the United States on July 4, 1795. At this time there were no roads or settlements in this area so exploration and claim were important steps in developing this region. In 1811, paddlewheeler captain William Teague founded Fort Teague on Coosa River near present day Jacksonville Beach after finding natural resources there such as phosphate rock and timber not available nearer Tampa Bay or within Umatilla Indian Nation boundaries
