Ocoee is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,543 at the 2010 census. Ocoee is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community of Ocoee was founded by missionaries from India in 1853 as an agricultural settlement on the east bank of Kissimmee Creek. It became a thriving commercial center during the 1800s with its cotton and cattle industries; these trends ended around 1930 when production shifted to textiles and truck farming. A post office operated here from 1853 until 1906. In 1913, entrepreneur J.C. Higginbotham purchased land here for $1,000 and began developing what would become Higginbotham Boulevard into one of Orange County's most important shopping districts. He named it after his late father, General James Higginbotham (1824-1903), who had served as military governor of Florida in 1898 during the Spanish American War and who had later donated land to Ocoee for development purposes. Higginbotham Boulevard still bears his name today. During World War II, local civilians helped build two Navy airfields in nearby Sanford – Eglin Air Force Base and Plantation Field – which were instrumental in helping Allied pilots gain aerial superiority over Germany during that conflict; both fields remain operational to this day. In addition, Ocoee played host to numerous military events throughout the war including parades on Castle Drive and Victory Boulevard; a balloon launch from downtown; a bingo game at Holmes Park; a Fourth of July fireworks display at Lake Eola; and several baseball games between US Army units stationed in nearby Maitland and Clearwater Beach. The postwar years saw growth for Ocoee as well: In 1955, Pritchett Chevrolet opened its doors here with dealership space totaling . By 1975, however, business had begun to decline due primarily to competition from larger dealerships within Orange County itself; Pritchett closed its doors permanently six years later but left behind an important legacy in terms of automotive retailing hereabouts (the current Kmart store was built adjacent to their former location). Nevertheless,OcoEE continues to enjoy significant economic stability today thanks largely to its strong college presence: More than 60% of all jobs reported by Monroe County government last year involved employees employed outside agriculture or related businesses such as construction or education – making it one of only seven counties nationwide where this percentage exceeds 50%.

The fort served as a supply depot until 1843 when it was abandoned because of term limits for Ulysses S. Grant’s administration at that time. A school started on this site in 1853 and continued until 1954 when it closed due to low enrollments which discouraged further development on the site while Fort Myers grew rapidly as a seaside resort town with multiple hotels, stores, restaurants and other businesses lining Indian River Bayou between First Street (now US 1) north to Third Street (now State Road 249) east and Fourth Street south to its mouth at Gulf Highway (SR 246). In 1915, Ocoee became part of Hendry County when it was created from parts of Broward County along SR 246 between US 1/US 19 Business Loop westward to I-95 exit 347S near mile marker 131B about midway through Interstate 95; Hendry County membership eventually expired in 1959 but portions including most of Ocoee remain within Hendry County government today under county jurisdiction only as far east asSR 246 touches I-95
