Ocoee, Florida is a small town located in Walton County, Florida. The population was 721 at the 2010 census. Ocoee is the home of Miami University, one of the largest universities in Ohio and one of the oldest universities in Great Britain. From 1861 to 1865, Mosely served as United States Postmaster at Ocala with responsibility for mail service between Miami and Tampa/St Petersburg via racetracks on Hillsborough River (now US 1). In 1870, he reopened his store as Mosely's Mercantile Co., becoming one of first mercantile firms established in Miami County. He continued serving as postmaster until 1902 when government service ended and he closed his business due to financial difficulties; however, he continued to operate a general store until his death in 1916 at age 95 years old. In 1961 Moseley's Store building was added to the National Register of Historical Places. Ocoee is a town in Osceola County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Ocoee was John Ladd who founded a post office in 1837. A year later he and his family moved to what is now Kissimmee and started a grocery store there. In 1842, James Waddle moved from Baltimore, Maryland to start an agricultural business near where Ocoee now stands. He imported 50 bushels of corn per acre (2 bushels /acre) from Canada and sell it at $1/bushel to farmers around central Florida. By 1865, Waddle had developed a large farm on which he raised cotton and other crops until his death in 1886. In 1893, lumberman Bennett Crealock established the first sawmill west of Tampa Bay in what is now Oviedo Township; this mill processed logs for local construction projects such as schools and churches. In 1916 John Dorman started manufacturing radios out of scrap metal retrieved from World War I battlefields in neighboring Bradford County; by 1922 Dorman had built two plants that produced over one million radios each week. In 1846, the area that is now Ocoee was part of Florida. A group of Seminole Indians who were living in northeastern Florida decided to move westward and seek new land. They traveled through what is now Georgia and Alabama and arrived in what is now Ocoee County on December 4, 1846. The first white person to live in what is today Ocoee County was William Bradford Beal, who bought the land from the Seminoles in 1847. He built a cabin on a hill near present-day United States 41st Street and U.S 90th Avenue. Beal became an early settler of this area, which at that time was mostly rural farmland. The first school in Ocoee County was established in 1848 by Mrs. James Fenton Wells. The school operated for two years before it mustered out of service due to lack of students. In 1850, Mr. Beal donated land to build a school house on US 41st Street between University Boulevard and Live Oak Lane. The first building on this site served as the school until 1902 when it was replaced by a new building that still stands today (US 41st Street between University Boulevard and Live Oak Lane). In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed at Fort Fisher on Jacksonville Beach with siege guns and supplies for his army besieging Petersburg, Virginia after crossing the Atlantic Ocean from England via blockade run ships transporting food into Richmond, Virginia during the Ulysses S Grant–era American Civil War (1861-1865). When news arrived of Ewell's landing at Fort Fisher about 15 miles north of Jacksonville Beach early one morning on November 11th, 1861 local farmers began pounding nails into posts near their homes as they watched vessels anchored offshore come ashore with troops disembarking while they slept - this event is known as "The Landing."
