Ocoee was also one of the first towns in Florida to be established as a seat of government. In 1907, the town was renamed after General Philip Sheridan, who helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War. The town experienced another growth spurt in the 1940s, when it became a popular tourist destination for retirees looking for relaxation and escape from the hustle and bustle of life in Miami. Ocoee is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 19,493 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ocoee was originally named "Orlando" after José de Armas y Hidalgo, captain general of Mexico under Governor Manuel Micheltier in 1824. The first permanent settler in what became Ocoee was James Hickey who arrived in 1800 and named it "Hochelaga". He donated land to the town for school purposes and also built a sawmill on the creek which still stands today. By 1825, most of Orange County had been developed and by 1830 there were over 20 homes in Ocoee. In 1835, John Kirby moved from Jacksonville to purchase 5 acres (20 ha) of land at present day downtown Ocoee from Cornelius Vanderbilt for $1,050. Kirby renamed his property "Kirbyville". In 1840 he sold his holdings to Moses Holland for $10 per acre ($240 per ha). This led to construction of two large churches – First Baptist Church (now First Methodist Episcopal Church) and Second Baptist Church – as well as some small businesses such as a store and post office. The first settlers worked hard during the early days before getting rich through farming or mining operations that followed soon afterwards.
