Ocoee, Florida is a small town located in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. The community was founded in 1877 by Englishman John O'Keefe and his wife Hannah. It became an incorporated municipality on November 3, 1925. Ocoee has a population of about 3800 people as of 2010. The first settler in what would become Ocoee was John O'Keefe, who arrived in 1877 with his family. He named the community after himself and his wife Hannah, both natives of Ireland. The original courthouse was built in 1878 and served until 1895 when a new building was erected on State Road 417 which served as the town hall until 1957. In 1916, the first school opened up in what is now the center of town; it was called "The School House". Army Lieutenant Commander Harry Semonowicz developed an interest in landscape architecture and horticulture during this time and began working on making some changes to Fort Pickens which he thought could improve its appearance from within. lieutenant commander Semonowicz later became curator at Miami-Dade Museum of Art fame where he directed exhibitions for more than 25 years before retiring in 2006. On October 15th 1938 Captain James Luscombe relieved Lieutenant Commander Harry Semonowicz as Commanding Officer Naval Air Station Key West after serving under him for almost two years nonstop from September 16th 1937 thru December 9th 1938 while Lt Commander Harry Semonowicz commandeered nearby NAS Jacksonville while still commanding NAS Key West's flying force Atlantic Fleet Auxiliary Squadron 5 while Capt Luscombe commanded NAAS squadron 4) since Lt Commander Harry Semonowitz relinquished command over NAS Jacksonville due to ill health then Maj(Gen) James Halsey assumed command over all Naval air stations worldwide without giving any notice or explanation to either MrSemonowicz or myself although I had prior knowledge of this change along with other top Navy Generals who were not given such clear instructions! This action by Maj(Gen) Halsey shows how much power Maj(Gen) Halsey had over our navy at that time!!
