The Ocoee National Guard was organized on March 15, 1920 as the Florida National Guard. The unit was re-designated on December 5, 1931 as the Florida Army National Guard. The National Guard is a branch of the United States military that typically consists of volunteer soldiers from various states and territories. The National Guard has been in existence since 1776, when the Continental Congress authorized the raising of an army to support its war against Great Britain. The modern National Guard was created on September 25, 1949, by Executive Order 9952. At that time, there were only 27 Armed Forces Reserve components (DUTY CORPS), each consisting of three battalions or companies of infantrymen. On November 15, 1950, all reserve components were redesignated as The Army Reserve and became known as The National Guard Bureau (NGB). As part of the O-Ring Plan which aimed to strengthens national defense against potential aggressor nations, both Regular Army and Air Force Reserve Component units were re-organized into separate brigades on October 1st 1957. On July 16th 1969 President Richard Nixon signed Public Law 89–596 which amended Title 38 USC § 3382 through allowing for establishment and funding for state military forces within federal jurisdiction under certain circumstances. This act also provided for establishment of two permanent joint task forces composed entirely of militia elements from participating states: The Governors' Conference Military Task Force (GCMTF) and The Military Affairs Committee Defense Mechanism Subcommittee (MACDS). These Joint Task Forces would be responsible for carrying out directives from either the Secretary of Defense or the chairman or ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee pending appropriation by both Houses. As part of this reorganization effort, all component units were given 4-year tours with no possibility for immediate retirement upon completion; however unit commanders could always request voluntary transfer or assignment to another agency if their current assignment became unsatisfactory or they lost interest in service. Upon expiration or termination of their tour they would be placed on inactive status with pay and benefits remaining available until such time as they returned to active duty in some capacity within 5 years after当日任職。
