Ocoee, Florida is a small town located in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Ocoee's history dates back to 1835 when it was known as "Aurora." The land that now makes up Ocoee was first leased from the Seminole Tribe of Florida by United States Congressman James K. Polk in 1836. In 1838, the area became part of Monroe County when it was created from parts of Miami and Lakeland counties. On December 1, 1888, Ocoee was designated as the county seat of Monroe County. The first courthouse in Ocoee was built on State Road 9 near its current location in 1984. The oil boomtowns that sprang up around Kissimmee and Sanford during the late 1800s were eventually replaced by smaller communities after oil production declined in the early 21st century. On October 24, 1839, the first land grant in Ocoee was made to James W. Baldwin. The grant was for 640 acres of rich bottomland in what is now Orange County. This land included a sawmill and gristmill on the Orange River. The area started to come into being as a place for farmers and hunters because of its rich phosphate deposits that were discovered nearby in 1853 by A.P. Hill and others at the peak of the phosphate industry in Florida. In 1860, Captain John Tatum became interested in developing this tract of land and petitioned the state legislature for permission to build a station on his Creek Indian Railroad from Ocoee eastward through central Florida to Tampa Bay. The legislature granted him this permission but not without condition that he make sure there was no competition from Spanish settlers west of Tampa Bay who had also been given permission to settle there. Captain Tatum's railroad reached Tampa Bay in 1875 but it never caught on like Captain Tatum had hoped because sugar cane growing on the Gulf Coast could provide more income than railways could bring in during this time period. In 1903, Major General William Halsey ordered all American forces out of Cuba so American interests there were focused on building up defenses against another Spanish invasion which eventually happened two years later when Admiral Dewey destroyed San Miguel de la Vega Castle while landing troops at Guantanamo Naval Base just outside Havana Harbor; this led to America's first war with Spain since 1783!
