The Ocoee Naval Shipyard was founded in 1911 by Rear Admiral John A. Pohl as a facility for the repair and overhaul of warships. The first ship built here, USS Philadelphia (BB-27), was launched on November 5, 1916. By the late 1920s, the yard had become one of America's leading naval shipyards, churning out vessels for both the American navy and navies of other countries. In 1953, when Florida became a state, the Ocoee Naval Shipyard came under its jurisdiction. In 1959, it acquired the former NAPA Company manufacturing plant in nearby Naples to be used as an industrial park for naval ships and weapons systems development. The next year saw construction begin on America's newest destroyer - USS Miami (DDG-59). This gifted vessel was later renamed after Admiral Thaddeus S. Cushing Jr., who served as Commandant of Marine Corps Base Miami from 1966 to 1976. As part of President George H.W. Bush's commemorative program honoring Flag Officer Commanding First Fleet during those years - including Operation Neptune Spear - DDG-59 was again renamed in his honor in 2003 following her decommissioning at NAS Jacksonville Beach, Florida.. The USS Ocoee was a destroyer of the United States Navy that served in World War II. The ship was named after the Ocoee River, near Daytona Beach, Florida.
Ocoee, Florida is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida. It was founded by white settlers in 1837, and has been the seat of government for Ocoee County since 1851. The community is surrounded by pine trees and oaks, and is known for its scenic views of the Comal River. Ocoee is a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 5,851 as of 2010. The CDP includes portions of both Ocoee Hills and Osceola Hills neighborhoods. The first white settlers to arrive in what is now Ocoee were James Waddell and John Smith. In 1837, they established a trading post on the Comal River near present day Ocoee. This post served as a hub for trade with Native Americans who lived along the river. By 1840, several other settlements had been built around this post including: Pilot Knob, Holbrook Springs, White Oak Bend, Spring Lake and others. In 1851, after years of effort by local officials and citizens alike., Ocoee was designated as the county seat for Ocala County which included much of today’s Seminole County. The original courthouse was located on US-1 just east of downtown Ocoee until it burned down in 1902. A new courthouse was constructed on Woodruff Street between First Street and Third Street in 1911 following an election campaign promise by then-County Mayor Harry Jernigan to have one structure erected within 10 years that would serve as both county courthouse and jailhouse/prison complex (the remains still stand today). Today’s downtown area experienced significant growth during spells from 1925 through 1945 when access to education became available at nearby Mabel Wright Technical High School (now part of Eastern Florida State College) through a state program called “First Class Education for All” which provided free public education to rural students up until then.(see map below) During World War II there were multiple munitions plants located in or adjacent to the Town including: demining operations at Belle Isle Plantation beginning in 1942; aluminum production at Enterprise Aluminum Company beginning 1943; steel production at Love Canal Plastic Worksbeginning 1944; ammunition production at Sheboygan Arsenal beginning 1945………all while downtown residents endured bombings raids nightly In 1951 voters rejected an amendment adding more than 1 mile² (3 km²) to downtown into what are now Ponce de Leon Boulevard/Osceola Avenue SW corner Biscayne Boulevard NE corner NW corner about 6 miles² (10 km²) west sidelying immediately south sidelying bounded northerly by Live Oak Parkway bisected easterly by I-95 exit 17A….this effectively restricted growth potential because it limited access to streetscape improvements such as widened sidewalks…..downtown continued To increase population thru annexation starting 1948 thru 1955 when Osceola Hills neighborhood annexed….and again thru 1959 when Ponce de Leon Boulevard district annexing…. finally reaching its current size about equivalents with neighboring Clearwater Beach

Ocoee was a small town in Florida when the American Revolutionary War began. The town was founded by Captain John Martin, who emigrated from Ireland in 1768. Ocoee served as a military garrison for the British Army during the war. After the war, Captain Martin decided to settle his family in Florida and named his town after his father’s native land – Ocoee, IN. In 1808,Captain John Martin donated 5 acres of land to build a courthouse and jail. The first courthouse stood on this site until 1836 when it was replaced by the current building. In 1829, Ocoee became part of Indian Territory and remained so until 1830 when it became part of Florida. As a result of its location at the mouth of an especially fertile river region, fishing became one of Ocoee’s most important economic activities early on. Fished products such as oysters, crabs and conch were shipped downriver to market in St Petersburg or Tampa Bay before being sold back home fresh or frozen. As commercial fishing diminished after World War II, some people turned to hunting and boating instead; however, resident Fishing license sales continue today as one means of support for local fishing communities statewide
The area that is now Ocoee, Florida was first settled by the Seminole tribe in the late eighteenth century. In 1821, a group of African Americans from Mobile, Alabama founded a community called Blackwater on the banks of the St. Johns River. The community grew rapidly and soon included a school and church. By 1830, Blackwater had become an important regional center for cotton production and commerce. In 1836, the Seminole nation attacked Blackwater and destroyed most of the town. Although it was soon rebuilt, Blackwater never regained its former prominence as a commercial center.
