Ocoee is a city in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Daytona Beach metropolitan area. Ocoee was founded in 1892 and incorporated as a town on November 3, 1907. Ocoee was once home to citrus produce operations and still has some of those businesses around today like Citrusland Farms which grows oranges and other citrus fruits. The main industry that left town ago though is now tourism with things like golf courses and theme parks being big attractions for visitors lately. Ocoee is a city in Marion County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,912. The name Ocoee comes from both its location on the Chattahoochee River and its nickname of "The City of Roses." In 1835, Floridian James A. Walton purchased 640 acres (2 km2) of land along the Chattahoochee River for $5 per acre. He named his purchase Ocoee after his old home town in England. Walton built a sawmill and grist mill on the riverbank in 1837 and started shipping logs to Jacksonville for lumber. By 1840, Walton had developed Ocoee into a small manufacturing center with papermaking being one of its first businesses. In 1851, he constructing what is now known as Walton's Mill State Park which today contains more than 20 buildings including 11 contributing mills dating back to the 1800s. In 1861-1862, Confederate General Ephraim Grant ran an unauthorized raid through Marion County looking for food supplies before his march on Atlanta during the American Civil War. One resulting event was when some men from Ocoee destroyed several Union munitions storehouses while they were unloading freight at night; this led to increased military tension between Union and Confederate forces in that area and ultimately resulted in Grant's surrender at Appomattox Court House four days later on April 9th
The first white settlers in Ocoee, Florida were the Gaines brothers who arrived in 1837. They named their land "Ocoee" after a Miami village that they had seen while exploring the area. The first store in Ocoee was built by Wm. Pritchett and opened in 1839. By 1840, there were ten stores in Ocoee and twelve businesses downtown. In 1851, Jno. Easley became the first postmaster of Ocoee and his office was located on High Street downtown. In 1865, the United States Post Office moved from its original location on Main Street to what is now US-1 near Sabin Boulevard. By 1870, there were over thirty businesses in Ocoee with a population of around one thousand people. In 1907, musicologist John Sopwith traveled through Florida and stopped at Ocoee for a week before returning home to record performances by Fats Waller at segregated black churches in Jacksonville and Mobile Bayous. After hearing about Sopwith's trip, local businessmen decided to invest $2,000 into building a theater which would seat 1,500 people and open November 8th that year called the Alabama Theatre Company Limited (later renamed Southern Star Circuit Theater). The theater was built on what is now US-1 south of Sabin Boulevard which acted as an interchange for roads leading out of town to rural areas north of town and into Tampa Bay
