Ocoee, Florida is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Ocoee was founded in 1892 by John and Emma Fenton as a post office and trading post on what is now US-1 south of present day Tucker Road. The name "Ocoee" means "place where light shines." In 1898, the post office moved to its current location on US-1 south of Tucker Road. By 1910, the town had developed into an agricultural center with cattle and poultry production being its mainstay. However, during World War II Ocoee became a major military airfield with over 100 housing units built for servicemen and their families. In 1957 the Ocoee State Fairgrounds were purchased by Monroe County for $325,000 from developer Harry Weisinger who planned to use them as a shopping mall and movie theater complex called Gateway Plaza IMAX which never materialized due to financial problems. In 1984 Gateway Plaza (now known as Regency Place) was demolished and replaced by another shopping mall that would become known as Miamisburg Shopping Center which later changed its name to Regency Place Mall when it opened in 1990 after merging with nearby Pembroke Pines Mall In 1998 First National Bank of Jacksonville merged with Citizens Trust Company Of Jacksonville which left First National Bankruptcy protection

The town was founded in 1855 by Colonel David Walker as a military outpost on the Intracoastal Waterway between Fort Union and Sanford. In 1861, General Andrew Johnson named it after General John C. Brevard who had fought during the American Civil War. The town became an unincorporated community in 1926 when it was merged into Seminole County. The first residents of Ocoee were white men from Georgia who founded the town to provide passage for cattlemen crossing the Intracoastal Waterway which at that time was only accessible by boat or by wading across. By 1860 there were over 20 businesses active in Ocoee including cotton ginning and provisioning for Confederate troops fighting in the American Civil War In 1865, local farmers organized themselves into what would become known as the " poorer classes" to resist land speculation from developers interested in developing what would now be called “the resort area around Lake Wylie” according to one historian A post office was established at Ocoee in 1866 under the name of Fort Union and mail service began operating from Sanford sometime later The first store opened at 2nd Street & Meridian Avenue with J P Smith as proprietor The water line between Sanford & Fort Union was completed in 1867 bringing much needed hydropower to this small community which had been dependent on oarsman for transportation until that point Mail service ceased operations due to lack of available carriers however an oral history indicates that someone (later identified as Mrs Ransom) delivered mail through a window even while blacklisted by Post Office personnel
