The Oldsmar Army Garrison was established in 1917 and has been a part of the Florida National Guard since 1959. The unit is known for its colorful and unique uniforms, as well as its tradition of giving military gifts to members of the community. Oldsmar is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. Oldsmar is located on Gulf of Mexico Boulevard just southeast of Tampa. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The first recorded reference to Oldsmar comes from 1697 when it was called "Punta de los Pinos". The name may be derived from Spanish "old" (meaning old) and "marrone" (a type of cheese), as well as Marrone's Point on the bayou which served as a landmark for Native Americans during their migrations through the area. In 1853, General Gabriel Harrison founded an agricultural colony near present day Tampa and named it Hillsborough County after his friend and predecessor in command in Indian Wars, Andrew Jackson Hill. However, by 1855 efforts had failed to attract settlers and Hillsborough County reverted back to Polk County control with its current spelling - Oldsmar being adopted in 1856. In 1886, A&W beer began operations at what is now known as Sam's Club across the street from where Gulf Express currently stands. In 1915, Wacoal Tire & Rubber Co., one of America's leading tire companies opened up shop here too before closing down in 1976 due to intense competition from Japanese imports; this event helped spur development around Gulf Express Plaza/Sam's Club across the street that continues today. The arrival of Interstate 4 BusLink increased travel options into and out of town while also creating new opportunities for businesses along GulfExpress Boulevard including restaurants such as Ruby Tuesday and Chick-fil-A; all within walking distance of downtown Oldsmar or just minutes away by car using I-4 Exit 283A which provides access to both Interstate 275B(Tampa) and US Highway 19E(New Smyrna Beach). Today there are several libraries dotting both sides of GulfExpress Boulevard - much like what exists today when compared to many years ago when only a few businesses dotted the otherwise desolate stretch between I-275B(Tampa) exit 281N(Smyrna Beach) exit 286W(Port Charlotte)
