The Coast Guard's history can be traced back to 1923 when a group of men from Oldsmar formed the first coast guard station in that town. At that time, there was no regular way for people to get information about marine warnings or events happening near their homes. So, these early officers had to rely heavily on communication networks such as radio and telegraph. The Coast Guard quickly became an integral part of local life in Oldsmar. Stationed at various points along the shoreline, the Coast Guards were able to provide safety and assistance to residents during coastal emergencies such as hurricanes and storms. In addition, they also provided support during times of peace by patrolling our beaches and waters. The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Oldsmar, Florida was established on December 15, 1941. The first Coast Guard Auxiliary Unit was organized at the Oldsmar Naval Shipyard and consisted of five Dolphin boats. The first Coast Guard Auxiliary unit was disbanded on November 1, 1942 due to a lack of members. On February 14, 1943 the Second CoastGuard Auxiliary Unit was re-established at the Oldsmar Naval Shipyard with an additional five Dolphin boats. On January 17, 1944 the Third CoastGuard Auxiliary Unit was re-established at the Oldsmar Naval Shipyard with an additional six Dolphin boats. The Fourth Coastguard Auxiliary Unit was re-established on October 5, 1947 with an additional eight Dolphin boats. In 1951 the Fifth Coastguard Auxiliary Unit was re-established at the old naval shipyard and consisted of twelve Ponce de Leonboats. In 1957 the Sixth Coastguard Auxiliary Unit was re-establishment and consisted of sixteen Poseidonboats. Oldsmar, Florida is a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oldsmar is located on state road 7 about 12 miles north of Jacksonville and 8 miles south of Gainesville. Oldsmar was founded by John Olds and his family in 1867 as a railroad stop on the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. On October 16, 1892, an act to rename Gainesville after General George Washington was approved by the Florida House of Representatives. Colonel J.B. " Bub" Sprague became head of the post office in 1902 and renamed Oldsmar after him in 1903 when it moved from its original location two blocks east of Main Street to its present site near State Road 7 on May 15, 1904. The first store opened here in 1904 under the name "Sprague's". In 1907-09 old Sprague's burned down but this only increased business for locals who built a new store (now known as First National Bank) just off US Highway 27 about one mile east of US Highway 7 on what is now Sprague's Road which still has evidence of that fire including an oven with shards missing from top that served as evidence until recently when it was destroyed by vandals while unoccupied; also see: History Of Oldsmar FL - A Timeline

The Coast Guard has played a critical role in every country that has had it, including America. The Coast Guard is responsible for safeguarding our coastline, waterways, and marine resources. It also provides support to law enforcement and emergency services when needed. In addition to its duties as a national security threat and public service, the Coast Guard is also an important cultural resource. In recent years, the Coast Guard has made a number of advancements in its gift history. For example, in 2006, Governor Schwarzenegger presented the first ever coast guard gift to then Mayor Bloomberg of New York City. This gift marked the beginning of a long friendship between California’s two most populous cities. In 2007, Congress passed legislation authorizing $1 billion for new shoreguard equipment and training programs across all 50 states. This money will be used to improve safety along America’s coasts and protect infrastructure from looters and terrorists alike. The Coast Guard has been giving gifts for years. Some of the earliest gift giving by the Coast Guard was in 1904 when an order was placed for a service revolver. The first actual gift from the Coast Guard was a small box filled with clothing and supplies to be used as part of a uniform, which was given to officers at their stations. In 1912, the Coast Guard began providing Christmas gifts to its members. These were small items such as hats or mittens. Beginning in 1916, special presents were given on New Year's Day and during summertime. Gifts that were given more frequently include watches, radios, sunglasses, lifejackets/snacks and other necessary supplies needed by both members and civilians along the coasts. In 1941, the Coast Guard started delivering personal care products such as shampoo and conditioner to members' homes directly from Coast Guards vessels stationed along the U.S.-Mexico border. This continued until 1946 when it became mandatory for all ports of entry in America to provide this type of service. Beginning in 1957, individual members could order cigarettes from local cigar stores instead of having them sent through military mailhouses. The following year saw the introduction of socks and underwear into this gift range; these items continue to be delivered today by commercial shipping companies

The town of Oldsmar is home to the oldest courthouse in Florida and the first post office in Florida. Oldsmar also has a rich history as a bedroom community for Gainesville and other largeUF cities. The town was originally called "Pinecrest" but was changed to its current name after General James H. Polk, who had been elected president of the United States in 1845. Oldsmar is known for its historic buildings and beautiful countryside that includes several golf courses and lakes.
Oldsmar was founded in 1882 by John H. Olds and his brother, Dr. C. W. Olds, who leased land from the Seminole Tribe of Florida for a town site on what is now UPPER PALM BEACH Boulevard. The town was named after two brothers who were investors in the project: John Olds and Clarence Wayles Olds. The first post office opened in 1883 and the first store was built in 1885. In 1896, the name of the town was changed to OLDSMAR because of its location on Palm Beach Boulevard (now I-95).
