Oldsmar is a small town located in Hendry County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by George W. Olds and his wife, Anna. The present-day town of Oldsmar was created from the merger of two villages – Belle Isle and Plantation – on November 1, 1921. TheOldsmar Volunteer Fire Department was organized on December 12, 1922. On October 30, 1923, the first automobile show in Hendry County was held at the Oldsmars Hotel. On February 4, 1924, the first school for African Americans in Hendry County opened its doors at Indian School Road and Spring Street. Mrs. Lillie Pritchett served as primary teacher until 1939 when she became principal of Jefferson High School. Msgr Edwin C. Hawkins followed her to that position after she retired from teaching in 1969; he served as interim principal from 1974 to 1979 and then permanently from 1981 to 1984 before becoming permanent principal since 1985 until his death in 2003 On January 2nd 1927 an oil well (Driftwood) wellhead discovered oil along US 10 just east of Oldsmar which aroused much interest throughout the county due to its proximity to Fernandina Beach and Jacksonville
