Oldsmar, Florida is a small town located in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population of Oldsmar was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded by General James Wilkinson on November 1, 1836 as Wilkinson's Landing and named after Colonel John Olds who donated land to the community. At that time the area was known as Key Biscayne Peninsula because it bordered both present-day Miami and Key West. On July 1, 1912 Oldsmar became an incorporated municipality with a total population of 12,461. In 1970 it annexed neighboring communities of Margate and Cutler Bay effective on July 1 following a referendum vote by the residents of those communities not to annex into Oldsmar. Oldsmar is home to two historic Naval installations: USS "Brooklyn" (1897) and USS "Tuscaloosa" (1931). These vessels were decommissioned in 2001 and 2003 respectively but remain stored in accordance with their US Navy records while awaiting disposition or conversion into Museum ships or tourist attractions. Both are now open for visitation during regular business hours only! The town also features several interesting landmarks including: Drane Park which overlooks Gulf Stream Lagoon; Fenton High School which was built in 1895; Indian Hill Cemetery; and theGeneral James Wilkinson House which still stands today as a museum/historic landmark open to the public from 9am to 4pm daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day inclusive!
